A clear plastic sheet covering the bodywork where the bungee straps go will also help preserve your paint.
Also do not rely on just the bungee cords that come on the tailbag to keep it in place. Some extra straps give some piece of mind. I know of several people who have had their tailbags poop loose and end up in the rear wheel. This is a bad thing. I always use some extra straps with a tailbag.
Properly secured, the tailbag is much better than a backpack.

what kind of extra straps?

the bungee cords feels tight and secure but any added precaution is always good.

This can be extra bungee cords, a 4 corner bungee, or a bungee net. When I use a tailbag I use a 4 corner bungee to give extra support.

When travelling I almost never use a bungee to strap extra stuff on. I use nylon straps. Much more secure. These are used to strap tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, whatever.

We do use bungees sometimes. You would be amazed what we have carried safely on the bikes. Our bikes are used for many purposes. Touring, camping, commuting, running errands, grocery shopping, play time, you name it.

Sometime you might want to check into the Ventura racks/luggage. Very handy and versatile.

By the way, I know of several people that have the same bike as you that tour on them. Now go ride.

Gaffa tape... You'd be surprised what you can secure with Gaffa tape and a little forethought...

You could get one of those backpacks with reflective strips. I think northface makes them
