It will. It'll also adjust how much it squats under braking and turning. Best bet is to keep it adjusted properly (or a little stiffer) than recomended for your weight and do the "correct" things to lower it (links, etc).

Mmm ok...but, and this is not for me, but how do you know what the best adjustment is for the rider's weight? Is there a chart or something? A friend wants a 500...just trying to make sure she has some adjustment options cuz she's petite...

Well, the stiff the preload, the better the handling. Though, the harder and rougher the ride. If she has/will get the manual for the bike, it should have instructions for setting it.
