I dont believe in absolutes, but in general starting on a GSX-R,ZX-6, or a CBR 600 is not the best idea. These bikes can be tricky to control sometimes and very expensive to drop. I would think a cheap and used bike in the 500cc category would be your best bet.
That is not an absolute though, some people start on liter bikes and do fairly well. If I were you, Id gather as much info as possible and realistically assess your financial options. There are some great stickies up top, start with those.

True, some people do alright with RR bikes as first rides, but the odds are highly against you. And imho (mostly from what I've heard from other riders) those who start off on these so called "beginner" bikes and then move up to the RR bikes once they've learned the fundamentals will be much better/faster/safer riders than those who started on the RR bikes.

If you just want to operate a motorcycle that you think you might look cool on, by all means it's your choice, but if you actually want to learn to become a good rider get something 250cc or less. In the end it's up to you.

great idea get the gsxr 750 but if you have extra money grab the 1000 or better still 1300r
you and VX could go on some death rides together

Good choice with the GS500, it's a sturdy bike and will serve you well. Learn to ride, get comfortable until operation of the bike is second nature. When you feel like you've mastered it (as much as one can "master" riding) then move up to your GSX-R. I hope to move up to a GSX-R600 after a year or two of riding.

I dont think its the bike as much as the attitude. Often the riders who are concerned with being safe and really learning are the ones who start on smaller bikes. The ones who are immature and obsessed with speed choose fast and sexy sportbikes. To me, attitude is the most important factor.
Im just not comfortable with using absolutes. Id rather arm someone with information than scare them into buying a Ninja 250.
