I work in a Motorcycle dealership as a salesman. I am old for the job, bout 36. One of the biggest problems most people have, is the fees. Destination (including assembly) tax and licence. Destination is the largest amount, usually between 399-599 depending on the unit.
Quads and Cruisers are the most expensive, KDX 50s usually the least. There are two mechanics involved in the set up, one to do the set up, another to make sure the first one did his job. Usually a B level tech will do the set up, and an A will verify the work is done correctly.
Tax is what your local state applies to the purchase of a new vehicle.
Licence is what your local DMV (MVD) fees are required for registering a new vehicle. Some dealerships DO apply a fee to this step. In my experience $50 a vehicle.
I would say that most of these fees are non-negotiable, with the exception of the 50 dollar processing fee for registering a vehicle.
If a dealership does waive the fee, they are simply going to apply it to the cost of the vehicle by not reducing the price of the vehicle below MSRP.
MSRP is for suckers, but you would be suprised the number of people who willingly pay the price (typically credit challenged indivduals).
Bear in mind that dealerships MUST make money to stay in business, so they will try and make money. Some models are more popluar than others, incuring more markup. There is no sure way to say what costs what unless you are the owner of a dealership, or a manufacturer (I am guessing they don't pay full pop)
Anyhow, most of the sales force in a motorcycle dealership are young and not very motivated to help or assist new or inexperienced cyclists.
If you have any specific questions, I will be more than happy to help the best I can. Just don't tell my boss.
