That or a healthy dose of fear.

Graduating from the MSF course and then passing someone in a no-passing zone has nothing to do with lack of willpower on the throttle. It has more to do with someone who has very little smarts about life in general. Still sad, but it's the person, not the bike.

(hey, I actually agreed with Vermilion on something! )

I rode with a group ride one day. They kept passing in the no passing zones. For some reason with a large sub-group of sportsbike riders this is acceptable. I'm unwilling to break that rule.

I do it all the time. Simply for the fact that overtaking zones are based on a car being able to safely overtake, not a bike.

I live by the rule: If in doubt, don't.

People on this board really go overboard sometimes. That guy would have hurt himself on a GS500, some people are just accidents waiting to happen. I would bet this guy probably wrecks cars on a regular basis.

There is more fear than real info being passed around on this board.

Cars can accelerate and pass almost as easily as a bike. Well, my car can anyway. Passing zones/no passing zones have more to do with available sight distance - hills, curves, intersections, etc... What type of vehicle you're using isn't the point - it's whether or not you can see what's coming while you're passing.

What sort of car would this be?

A Subaru WRX. My point is... in a passing zone, if I have the clearance, I'll overtake anything - on my bike or in my car. But if it's a no-passing zone, it's usually because there is a blind curve or a hill or an upcoming intersection. I don't feel it's wise to recommend that just because you're in/on a fast vehicle, then you should go passing in a no-passing zone. Also, in a crash situation, the police will issue a ticket for breaking that law, and then you're responsible for the crash and there's a whole new issue with insurance coverage.

It's really sad when someone wrecks before they even have the time to learn what they're doing. There are no illusions about the fact that the first few months of biking are the most dangerous, and getting through them is about a little luck and a lot of caution. It's too bad that this guy, whoever he is, won't get the chance to develop any real riding skills. I hope he gets to walk again.
