Mine actually fits under the seat and then flips out. Personally, I don't like to leave my helmet alone for any length of time, so I'll carry it. There's always the possibility some moron will walk by and dump something in it. Slurpee, coke, milk, coffee, puke who knows. People can be right twats, so I would far rather carry it around with me.

the helmet lock on mine is on the right side just under the seat. I usually just put my helmet on the little rack on the back of my bike and strap it there with the chin strap

I dont park on sidewalks. I usually always park on the white striped area at the front where the handicapped spots are. Just be sure to park in a way that is not in the way of whoever parks in that spot, there's usually tons of room at the front part where you know that you are well clear of their way.
I've parked in lots with horse police patrolling and patrol cars parked right nearby. The most they've done is wave hi to me.
Though I wouldn't start up the bike when the horse is right next to you

lol they'd be on that like white on rice around my parts. it'd be a fat ticket too. not to mention people (and not even the handicappers necessarily) would probably resent it even if it didn't restrict anyone's use of the spot.
as for the helmet, someone else's post i recall said it best. something like "my helmet cost 500-700 dollars (or whatever it was), no way i'm leaving that on my bike." bike could get knocked over and you could be out a helmet along with the repair costs for the bike, etc. etc.
if/when i finally get out there i will try to keep my helmet with me if i can. i hope it turns out that i have an hjc head and not a shoei or an arai. haha.

1will- where in DC are you?
I would never leave my helmet with my bike. I've seen people let their dogs pee on bikes and the spray hits the helmets. I've seen a clear day turn to thunderstorms in 10 minutes. I've seen more idiots jumping on bikes and going Vroom Vroom then I've seen rednecks at Walmart. Worst of all I've seen the strap of a helmet on a helmet lock with the helmet missing (helmet law only requires a lid, not necessarily a strap! After you steal your scooter why would you go and buy a $100 helmet?
Sometimes I barely feel comfortable leaving my 500 lb locked bike alone around where I live (DC Metro area) so I definately wouldn't leave my helmet there, even locked to the bike.

mo county so i guess that makes me a faker.
oh wait i forgot, i spend more time at the office than anywhere else so there you have it.
but seriously, security is a big concern for me as i plan on purchasing a bike in this area. i am moving locally within a month or two and parking will be a substantial consideration. i will probably end up spending more on security than is really justified for whatever bike i end up getting, just for the peace of mind.
it's funny that you mention the vroom vroomers as they are another reason i will make alarming my bike a priority. it may not stop a determined thief but at least it should keep the wannabes off... oh wait i'm a wannabe still...but at least i don't go clamberin on peoples rides! ha

I'm not at all sure how accurate this is, but I've never heard of a cruiser being stolen in the DC area. I'm sure it happens, but not nearly as much as a sportbike. IF you're not sure which way you're going, I'd push you toward an older cruiser or standard bike. Put a heavy chain on it, leave it in a garage or off the street if you can and don't leave lots of accessories on it.
If you get a GXXR or a CBR be prepared for MANY MANY more anti theft precautions and of course, disapointment.

i didn't invest in any anti-theft devices BUT i did invest in a full coverage insurance. GSXRs are the most stolen bike here in LA as i was told.

I don't know what it's like in L.A. but around D.C. sport bike theft is pretty high. I've actually seen guys drive up, hop out of a truck, lift a bike into it and drive off in broad daylight from my office window. Took them about 30 seconds. At night it gets crazy.

When I lived out in LA, I was looking out my window and some guys pulled up with a truck and tried to grab this guy's bike (about 10pm or so)... the guy happens to be standing outside (not wearing any gear or anything, they probably just through he was a random pedestrian), and before they life the bike off the ground, he pops off about 6 shots from a concealed weapon and drops both of them
Needless to say, we moved. And needless to say, that guy really loved his bike.
One my friend here at my college has a Ninja 6RR, and he fit one of those Viper alarms to it... 2 x 135 dB. You can hear it from across campus. It also vibrates his key chain when it goes off, people attempted to steal it at least once... His neighbors were pissed, since it woke them all up, but the guys didn't get away with the bike.

I rarely use my helmet lock. I hate where they're positioned on most crusiers, because if you have saddle bags it's next to impossible to use it. I wish all curisers had the pilon seat come off like sports bikes so that you had a very tiny storage spot and easy helmet lock access.
I've seen those helmet locks that also work as a license plate holder, but they just seem stupid to me. Anyone could unscrew it in a minute and walk away with your helmet. Anyone use one of those?
