Indeed...but they've been in the news a little too much lately. I thought their server was shut down?

Anyway, I used to use WinMX, then switched to LimeWire. I fired-up WinMX a few days ago and it appeared to be dead.
WinMX got into trouble last year so they shut down their central servers but...

if I understand what they did corrrectly they made the software open source so anyone can run it.

The WinMX netwrok still works but you have to make a change to your settings to do it. I can't remember what they are offhand - but their was a very nice girl in a WinMX chatroom that talked me through it.

I still get music off of WinMX but generally only when America is online.

The movie side of WinMX has gone way downhill, it seems most of the users on WinMX have music, music videos or popcorn...

It doesn't matter, really, because LimeWire is about 10x faster than WinMX was on a good day. I was just curious to see if it was still functional.

Worth a shot, but the thing is that because of the way bitorrent works, they didn't shut down a server, they shut down a website with about 100000 little files. I can get those same files ANYWHERE and it'll let me download the same full length movies as the torrents ones that I got off of the website that was shut down. It's just a series of links on a website.

Here check this place out.

That's bitorrent files.

They're worthless without the program, but they aren't a server for file distrubution, it's a website.

I suspect the article called it a server because that sounds much more impressive then, "we shut down a website, but 3 more are going to pop up to take it's place. We cannot do anything to stop the files from being shared, because there's no central server (such as WinMx and Limewire have) to shut down."

LoL

In that case I might have to sneak Limewire onto Jules' machine. Of course if she catches me I gonna say you made me do it...

I use uTorrent, I basically only download stuff that i dont think i will like. Like a movie, that i dont think is worth money to pay for. But if i like the movie, I usually go out and buy it. Same for Games. Not really the same for music though.

I only use torrents for legal purposes, Downloading non copyright programs and such.

(just incase a FBI bot sees this just to be safe)

Umm, no. Bittorrent itself is a piece of technology, you can't shut it down any more than someone can shut down the home of putty, or an FTP client. You can shut down web sites that bittorrent trackers are placed on, which is what's been happening.

There are always ways to get around things like that, however, such as trackerless clients.

That's the technilogical side of it. I'd prefer we keep to that and not the other questionably aspects of its uses.
