I defy anybody to name a modern 900 or larger that can exceed the total mileage from one tank of fuel that the old Yamaha does. And that 55 mpg is achieved at speeds of 65-70mph with occasional bursts to 100 on long passes.
Clearly mileage became an obscure feature from the eighties through the present.
My '94 FXSTC Harley Soft tail got 55mpg on average. With a 5 gallon tank that is about 275 miles, but if I travelled about 55mph, it rose to about 60mpg, or just a bit over 300 miles per tank. My '05 Road King gets about 55 mpg, but I'm doing about 60mph so I think the mileage is pretty good.
