I love how this thread has gone on for two years! It's very amusing to me.
The world of women is very confusing and the nasty looks would probably happen if you were wearing the wrong shoes and no bikes were involved.
However, I did have a friend who dated some women who just liked to be seen. I didn't have a bike then, but I'm sure I would've gotten nasty looks if I did have one because I'd be stealing their show. And that's not to say that all hip huggers are like that. I was a hip hugger at the time. It's just to say that there are people who enjoy riding and there are people who use it because it makes them feel like they are special because their boyfriend has a bike.
maybe we should come up with some sort of evil look patch, could have circle with a line through it.....just kidding....
I take those looks with a grain of salt. I ride with my girls, play with my girls, hang with my girls...those who give us the look are probably jealous and just want to come and play too, they are welcome they just need to leave the nasty look at home.
Most of the outright, turn your head, kind of stares that I get are actually from elderly women. This past weekend there I was all decked out from head to toe in my gear, sparkly helmet and pink-white jacket at a stop sign. With the man driving, the woman went by just taking the sight of me all in. I didn't get a sense that she did or did not approve; it was almost like she doesn't see that many female riders in our neighborhood. I wasn't sure whether to acknowledge her stare with a hand wave or not.
It is neat when little girls press their faces to the car window to get a better look. I give them a cool little head nod and try real hard not to stall out when the light turns green.
LOL rocketgirl...those cute little faces pressed up against windows always brings a smile to my face and I can see some parents ...me reading their lips saying don't stare or don't look, I find it humorous .
I found it interesting last night at the Tim Horton's (coffee shop) - the mecca for bikers - at least in Alberta .
I was the only girl riding her own bike, all the guys would talk to me and my husband, none of the girls.... thought it was a little weird.
Didn't notice any dirty looks, didn't really care though, because I was out riding on my week old bike and no one could bring me down from that!!!
