harleys are cool cause they have a mellow ride, instant power (no not more power, but its available right away) a real solid all metal feel, and a special sound. if these are tangibles that you would like, then its cool, if they are not, then its not.
I like how they have more metal on them, I like how the parts feel more solid when touched and sat on. Would it matter for anything? naw, I am not going to wear through or break my levers or foot pegs even if I ride my suzuki 300,000miles. Would they break if I crashed, oh yeah they would, would the slightly thicker and meatier feeling harley parts break in a crash, oh yeah they would. But even though its unnessisary weight and so on, it feels nice.
and trying to explain the high points of a harley without the intangibles is not a good picture really. Yeah part of it IS the image, good! maybe I want that image, same reason i wear dress shoes at work. they cost more, are not as comfortable, supportive, or as performance oriented as my gym shoes, but I get respect more when wearing them and feel better in some ways with them on. Go ahead and find me someone who's completely image free, who doesnt care about what anyone thinks. This person, likely doesnt have the money for a motorcycle, dont kid yourself, there is always a bit of image in it.
that being said, I think harley boys have a lot to do with the polarizing concept themselves. Now I know there is more than the fair share of harley bashing on here, but a lot of it resounds around the machines themselves, oftentimes, but not always, things that are true. While harleys do have some nice points, there are a lot of not so nice points as well. Instead of taking a "well I got it cause I like it" approach, it seems a lot of harley boys gotta defend it right from the get go, american made and real bike cliches, well they become cliches cause they are said too many times.

Or the tried and true - if you have to ask, you have a brain...oh wait, if you have to ask, you have taste....no no, I'll get it...if you have to ask, I can ignore you as an invalid person. I remember now -

If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand. Yeah, the first time I heard that slogan, I thought they were right - I wouldn't understand.

To each his own and I hope the Harley rider have a great ride too.

I guess I'll throw this out there so the thread doesn't die too quickly, lol... My Honda Shadow had stickers that looked like flames instead of real painted stickers on the gas tank, the fenders were plastic of some sort, and the pipes were really just crappy pipes covered by chrome covers... could this be why some Hondas cost less?

Gummiente wrote:It's the people like Mintbread, though, who really make you wonder. You'd think that after a few years they'd realise that it doesn't matter WHAT you ride, it's THAT you ride, but some just can't seem to ever let that sentiment penetrate through their bozone layer.
And that is where you have read me completely wrong Gummi. In my years of riding I have learnt many things and one of them is that I don't care what I am riding as long as I am, in fact, riding. This is the reason that when I am at work riding a 110cc motorcycle I am doing it with a smile on my face, the reason I have never owned and never will own a brand new bike and it is also why I currently own a bike that I bought as a salvage and just fixed it up to make it go. I simply love to ride.

I have also learned that the actions of a minority end up reflecting badly on the majority and this is why I have a, not even dislike, but a disinterest in Harley-Davidson and also Ducati. I have been made to feel rather inferior on several occasions because I "only" ride a (insert Japanese bike insult here). I have no doubt that the bikes are great to ride but my opinion of them has been coloured by their owners to the point of not wanting to be associated with that type of persona.

The sooner the Harley and Ducati riders realise that it is about riding, not what they are riding the better, because if you ask me the whole purpose of riding got lost somewhere in their respective marketing departments.
