Computer routers face hijack risk: study

"Researchers at the University of Indiana and Symantec Corp. are warning that about half of internet users
with a home router are vulnerable to having the hardware hijacked."

No "poo poo". Leave a default or blank password on a device and it can easily be broken into. News flash

For the first semester of school last year there were no less then 4 wireless networks in range of my computer. Within a week I was admin for 3 of the 4. I could basically do anything from preventing an individual user from accessing a specific page to completely shutting down all internet access for anyone that uses the router. I didn't abuse it, but it does pay to make sure you've protected yourself at least a little.

Oh-h-h-h-h-, so it's you causing me so much grief.

Today I was attempting to create a disk with all my pictures on it so I could have a back up for when I do a system restore. I had spent a significant amount of time copying and saving into the DVD program, when all of a sudden that dreaded error report popped up and said the program must close. It's enough to make you want to swear. It closed and all my work was gone. I have to start over.

I hate when that happens.

I have never had an illegal operation or even any error ever on mine. You might have not installed you program right. Also do you have enough memory?? That might be the problem.

Yes, there is plenty of memory and all the programs that are on here came with the computer.

I used to have the occasional error message on my old computer as well. I think it is the microsoft software that is the culprit.

I'm going hiking now and taking a break from this machine for awhile. The fresh air will be better for me than sitting here saving files.

From when I first made this thread, I (along with everyone's help and my friend Doc) have been trying to solve my computer slowdown on the internet.

As a last measure, and after exhausting every avenue, including a few hours on the phone with telus techs.....I finally did a system recover last night.
I made the requisite recovery disks and then saved my pictures and documents onto disks.
Then I let the computer do its system recover, which reformats the hard drive.
I forgot to back up my address book. . However, I can rebuild that.

So-o-o-o, last night and today has been spent taking care of all the updates and security. Talk about time consuming.

Anyway, the computer was still running slow on the internet. I'm sure you can imagine how this has become.

OK, now this is interesting.

I went down to the parking garage where the recycle bins are and found a modem like the one I have. I should mention that people leave stuff down there for other people to take. It's kind of like a trading post.

So, I unplugged the modem I had and plugged in the modem I found. I won't go so far as to call my computer Blazing Saddles.....but.....it's working again.

When I was talking to the telus tech, I asked if it could be a defective modem and he said no way. Apparently it is.

It's so nice to be able to click on a page and it actually opens.

Those chumps at Telus have NO IDEA what they are doing. I had nothing but issues with them when I was out there. If you want them to actually do what they're supposed to you have to patiently but firmly insist that they send a tech out to check things after you go through their phone troubleshooting, when things are still broken.
