Real winter tires are made with a different rubber compound than either all season or summer tires. This compound retains more grip when the temperature drops below freezing than normal tire rubber. The biggest difference is on ice, but it helps on frozen pavement as well. They offer slightly more traction in actual powdery snow too, but it's not a huge difference. When the snow on the road packs down, it becomes what amounts to ice, and rubber compound becomes more important than tread design, though winter tires tend to have more aggressive tread patterns than all seasons. This is where any perceptions of better snow traction mostly come from. All seasons work well enough in snow, ice is the main concern.

People I know call them snow/ ice tires and many only fit them on the drive wheels. They stopped doing it because the pavement is pretty clear a day after a regular snow fall and a 3 -4 days after a bad one, not sure if that's going to change after this financial crisis though. Don't these winter tires shed tread once on dry and higher than freezing pavement?

Yep, winter tires wear very quickly when used in warm, dry conditions. Once out of their operating range, they last about like a set of bike tires lasts..... but your average cage driver won't accecpt such a limited service life from a set of tires. Yous gots to be a rider to be happy with 5, maybe 10 thousand miles from your rubber.

Okay my head seems a bit calmer and such and I reviewd the summons I received last week. The violation states "hours of operation." No mention of whether it's a misdemeanor or just some lame fine. The back states that I have to go to criminal court so I'm pretty much worried that may be branded as a criminal regardless of what type.

If I have a misdemeanor on my record my degree in Forensic Science will be useless (if I'm still allowed in the school which is John Jay College of Criminal Justice). Getting a job in law enforcement (pig or fed) will probably be a challenge and other employers might think I can't be trusted since I broke a rule. I swear if I have to work in a minimum wage job without any hope to get a good career then I'll probably do something drastic. I did not spend all that money to get a piece of toilet paper.

The counselors in my school are pretty useless because they say I have nothing to worry about and I don't want to contact a lawyer yet until I appear at my court date to plead not guilty and get another court date. Besides I might be responsible for court costs if I end up losing (NY is hurting for money and they might make examples out of people).

Viper my friend, I think you could well be making a tempest in a teapot here and causing yourself far too much undue stress and worry. This ticket is more then likely no worse then getting a minor traffic violation ticket. Also, if you are that worried, contact the local legal aid group in your area, they should be able to give you more information and help.

I find that having this issued to me so close to the holidays I feel like I cannot enjoy myself as if I had to constantly watch my back on everything I do in the city. Some say that it will be quite a challenge to get a federal law enforcement job with a misdemeanor, and others say it will be a fine and nothing more (adding that the judge will make the final decision).

Okay this is lame, Nero 6 won't work with Vista because those bastards at Nero won't release any patches for it to work on Vista. Now I have to go and spend $50 for Nero 9 if I want a full featured burning and entertainment suite. All it needed was a patch, I got programs from Win 98 running on Vista with no problems for god's sake.

Plus I might need to pick up a new hard drive, I'd never thought I'd run out of space with a 250GB drive...

The only upside is I only paid $4 to fill up my tank so my bike is good for another 200 miles.

Yesterday, the ride home was great, clear skies, dry pavement and fairly warm temps.....(warm being a relative term)


That was yesterday, on the ride into work today I hit hail, driving rain, and sleet...........the ride home, much more of the same.......think its the first time I have done under the speed limit on Highway 17....pity the cagers didn't follow suit.

I have come to think of cagers as some sort of herd animal, that bunches up close together when danger approaches, or in this case, bad weather and driving conditions.......seems they speed up and close up....then wonder why chain reaction accidents happen.....personally I wouldn't mind that much, especially if it thins down the herd a bit, but why do they have to include me in their little herd like dance of death??????

Maybe the rest of the world should follow the driving practices of Germany or Japan. After watching History channel's Autobahn show the Germans really take driving poperly seriously.

As for idiots closing in on each other they believe in the notion of follow in the tracks of the car in front. I like how (in my neck of the woods anyway) these idiots pass last minute in such conditions and if they lose control the car they're passing gets hit. Also some don't like having their headlights on while it's raining in the day time.
