Really, if it was just race, however, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton would have won before. While people may say race is an issue - really it was Obama that inspired them to register and go out and actually vote. It says a lot for Obama's power of persuasion.
I don't agree with that. If it was just race and those two ran they definitely would have lost because they're way too extremist.

Sorry - I don't mean would have won the race. I meant they would have garnered support like never before from the black community. They supported Sharpton and Jackson, sure - but not the way they did Obama. Looking at the voter registration statistics and donations, etc - the difference is astounding.

What a really moronic statement.

Truer words where never spoken.
You should watch news based around the NYC area because the answers the supporters gave clearly show they don't know too much about the man who is running and just focus that having a black person in office would be historic.

Obama received about 5.7 million more votes than McCain did last night. So either Barack Obama inspired a number of different people of all races, ages, and genders, or there's just simply that many more racist, ignorant people voting out there who are too prejudice to consider ol' John McCain.
Hmm, 5.7 million? That's a bucket of people alright! That's almost 2% of the entire American population. A decent margin. But they're all stupid.

Obama won the popular vote by 7.55 million people.
I guarantee more people voted for McCain because he's white than voted for Obama because he is black. In Mississippi, 90% of whites voted for McCain. The whole "because he's black" thing is quite ridiculous, as black voters have ordinarily voted Democrat strictly due to policies. For some perspective, black democrat votes went from 88% in 2004 to just over 90% in 2008. This is actually right in line with the rest of the country's shift to the left this election.
The remarkable thing about this election, in my opinion, is that race was NOT an issue for many voters. THAT's historically significant.
