I've seen some custom "choppers" that just make me think WTF?!?
A custom has all the shiney skull-shaped headlamps, iron cross mirrors and Statue of Liberty engraved tail guards. Something that looks like it was made in a workshop and costs ££££.
A chopper is a minimalist bike that has exactly what necessary to make it go and be safe and little else. Something that looks like it was made in your garage over 6 months worth of sundays.
For the record, I ride a cruiser and am planning a chopper. But I intend to spend more time riding it than polishing it.

Back in the 80's I had a 64 panhead with a stretched out springer front end. I hated that bike. It was a ride for 20 minutes wrench for 2 hours kind of thing, but besides that, straight line riding was about all it was capable of. Turning at stop signs sucked, manuvering in parking lots sucked, even minor twisties became hair raising. When i sold it people lined up around the block to buy it. Poor fools!

Choppers, by definition, were production bikes that had the frame chopped and rewelded to achieve that long, low, raked look. Much like the chopped street rods of the era.
The stuff they build now are custom bikes from the frame up. They have the look of choppers, but they're not choppers.

Which is what I intend to do. I have a stock Kawa frame which will be relieved of it's unnecessary parts. It'll be hard-tailed and have new electrics and an air-cooled lump driving a belt. Wheels'll probably be stock. Oh, and there'll be no f*****g chrome on it.
Some of these modern style customs are pretty to look at, but if a bike arrives at a show on a trailer, what's the point of it?

I beg to differ as far as rideability . I built this in my living room from the ground up and it turned out to be my last chopper , but it sure was one hell of a lot of phun !
