Getting nailed in the right cheek by a BUMBLE BEE - while wearing my helmet, and dodging those BIG ugly 17 year cicadas last spring really reconfirmed helmet wearing for me...
Then again, I went down last summer - smacked my head good on the asphalt. And slid 100 feet with the bike on my leg.
(ATGATT) All the gear, all the time.

I'm guessing you were wearing a shorty helmet when the bee got you. I started with one of those, and bees would come in on the sides and get lodged by my ear, then sting their way out. Big OW. Full face helmet came soon after. Windscreens help, but not entirely.

2 in 50 of them had a helment on huh.
Well all I can say is there are a lot of stupid people out there.
Someone mentioned seeing a helmet that was all scraped up, yea that was mine. Here it is, I think everyone should see it.

I was going maybe 10 mph when I hit the ground and I slid for maybe 20 feet but look at the helment. Also look at my knee in the background. In that 20 feet the asphalt ripped through my jeans like they were tissue paper and then it started ripping into my knee.
Helmet, Jacket (made for motorcycle riding), Pants (also made for riding) and boots that cover and protect the ankle. Don't leave home (on your bike) without it.
BTW, My knee looked a lot worse two hours later when the swelling set in.

My bad... I've ONLY worn a full face helmet. That bumblebee looked like a big brown rock and sounded like one too as it blinked into view the instant before smacking the face shield.oldnslo wrote:I'm guessing you were wearing a shorty helmet when the bee got you. . .

I took a head-over the bars crash in England on my mountain bike a few years ago...hit the drainage cut perpendicular to the road at 25 mph. Don't ask what I was doing up on the grass at 25...it's a little embarrassing. Anyway, i landed on the road and will never forget the sound of my helmet hitting the asphalt. I lost skin, too. Road rash on shoulders and one knee, one elbow.
Wear the helmet, it looks just as cool anyway.

Ride safe...God bless!

That definitely was the picture I was talking about Keysman. I had seen plenty of pics of people without helmets and what happened, but when I saw the pic of your helmet, I really understood for the first time that they really are working for you. And Macka, that looked like it was one ugly wreck. Is that from yours or something you just found?
I rode the SV once without it for 10 min and will never do it again. I was freaked out the whole time. And to think last year, I would not wear a helmet unless it rained, and jacket and gloves and pants. Now, I will not go out without armored gear period. Every time I feel all of that armor, I feel so much better. My main reason for buying my paticular jacket was how reinforced it felt compared to the others. I'm glad I changed my ways.

Thirty years ago, I totalled my bike going of the high side of a curve. I'm told that I went 30 feet down the pavement standing on my head. I suffered several broken bones and was in a coma for three days. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, I wouldn't be around.
I'm just thankful that God gave me a brain to use, that I used it that day, and that I still can use it.
