You can't legislate away stupidity. Mandatory MSF before getting a license would not have prevented this as she didn't have a license. There is nothing to prevent someone from lending someone else their bike so trying to legislate that bugaboo out of the equation won't work either. A license should set the bar for what skills you need to start out as a rider. If you chose to break the law and ride without one you are doing so at your own risk. I feel bad for her but it can't be up to society to protect stupid people from themselves.....

Maybe, but more education is important. I have no doubt that if this gets any serious public attention, either her or her parents will begin to rally for how dangerous motorcycles are and how they should be banned altogether.

Sometimes you have to force people to educate themselves. You have to force most children to get an education, and most adults act like children anyway.

True. But then you may as well do away with all laws in general.

Laws are there to protect the citizens. Without them it'd just be a free for all. We could kill anyone we want, steal anything we want, rape, loot, abuse.

'But other people would kill you back' you say? But isn't that right there a law? Do something wrong and people retaliate. That's a law in its crudest form.

It's more or less impossible to have a system without laws.

The point where we get over-burdened with laws is where the cut off should be. I don't think a license requirement is at that point yet.

Oh and company cars are in someone's name. That someone owns a license. I guarantee it.

And I doubt the company would even let anyone who didn't have a license drive the car.

shiv... if you guarantee that, your guarantee is foolishly given.

There is simply no requirement to have a DL to register a car. Nor are company cars in the name of a person. Think about it, is a publicly traded company, IBM for example, going to say "our cars are actually owned by Joe Smith in Fleet Maintenance and we just hope he keeps letting us use them." Absurd. Similarly, there is no necessity to have a pilot's license to but an airplane. It is just silly. Go talk to a car dealership or research the laws.

There is also no legal requirement to have a license to ride a motorcycle. A 10 year old can purchase and legally ride a motorcycle without a license or learner's permit or anything else. They just can't ride it along a public road. They are allowed to cross certain public roads on them though.

You have to admit tho - going 100mph just after getting on a bike, with no helmet or protective gear is definitely a nomination for a Darwin Award!

One thing you can say about that girl is that she's brave. The first time I rode my bike I was nervous riding around my neighborhood going 20-30mph. That, or she got scared and pulled open the throttle (which is why new riders shouldn't get sport bikes).

I don't think you can even buy a car without a license. Or at least when I bought mine, though it was used through Enterprise, they required multiple copies of my license.

I think it makes sense to only sell to people with a license.

You don't have to have a license to buy a car in Florida. All of my kids had cars before licenses. The way we did it is we drove our kids to work until they had money for a car and insurance. After they had both, we taught them to drive in their own cars. The each owned their own cars before getting a DL.
