I put mine on the centerstand while on the bike. It has an arm sticking off it. I push it down till it hits, then stand on the are while pulling back on the handle bars. Pops right on the stand.

I've tried putting on the centerstand being off the bike and have almost dropped it everytime.

Being on the bike works better for me.
A dog had his chain reduced one link at a time, every few days, until his chain was so short he could barely move. He never resisted because he was conditioned to the loss of his freedom slowly, over time. Are we in this country becoming like the dog?

I don't use the centerstand on soft surfaces. It's fine as long as the stand sinks evenly into the ground. If it sinks unevenly, you'll have a problem.

Never had a problem using the sidestand and a 5" square piece of plywood.

everything worked out well, the gravel rtoad was a little slippy, but at 40 KM/h no problems! as for the parking, I found a really packed area and used the side stand. everything was still upright when I came to surface that day, so all was well!

Centerstand note- standing on the side with the litle standing sticking out bit of the side stand, grab the little grab handle under the seat, the left handle grip and stand on the standy bit, should pop right up, but watch that center of gravity.

DOubt I could do it while sitting on bike though.

and snow sucks, I didnt have any the other day 8) it was a balmy 3 C (37F) that morning....

Sitting on the bike   That cracked me up! When I was a noob, I somehow got the idea that I could put my 400 lb. bike on its centerstand while sitting on the bike. I think it was because I'd seen moped riders do it that way. Needless to say, after dozens of futile attempts, yanking on the bars and pushing down on the stand, I realized it was not possible.

It's kind of like licking your elbow. It doesn't sound difficult until you actually try it.

(BTW- I can see you guys out there trying to lick your elbows now  )

I can get my RT (535 lb. wet) up on it's centerstand while straddling the bike. It takes practice, and a little bit of grace, but it's doable. Riders and girls in the know are impressed when they see it done.

It might help that I have a 36 inch inseam and strong legs

getting MY bike up onto a centerstand requires an enormous amount of strength, mainly cause it has none and am holding the whole bike.
