The trick to riding a sportbike is to hold yourself up with your legs, squeeze the tank with your knees. you dont want to hold yourself up with your arms. As for the scooting up in the seat, it might work if you are on the skinny side.

I took my first ride on a sportbike this last saturday, I was most comfortable with my butt as far back on the seat as I could get and squeezing the tank with my knees, this allowed me to have a nice light touch on the bars which makes the bike much easier to control, especialy at low speed.

I was anticipating some difficulty in manuvering the bike at parking lot speeds, but with my weight off my wrists I had zero problems manuvering the bike, I would say it was even easier to manuver than my old CX500 (which has a bolt upright riding position), guess the 100lbs less weight helps too.
