Am I going about this properly?
I have a VN750 also. Mine is a 1993 model. I am 5'3" and I am very pleased with the ride and power that it delivers. I get a little front wheel wobble at 105 mph, but I blame it on the shield. But it is okay I seldom run over 75 mph.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I appreciate it, and I'll use the advice. I will go back and test drive everything on my list once I pass my course, 250cc's included (maybe not the Rebel though... 
).
Passing my class is the last obstacle before I choose my ride, I've got everything else lined up: I have my wife's approval (she's even buying me my jacket!), financing, and my choices all fit my budget, including insurance quotes, which are much more reasonable than I originally thought.
Now I just have to wait for July 12, 15 and 16th. That wait just sucks...
