Do we really have to go down the road of cruiser vs sportbike??????
Back to the topic....sounds like you got a cop in a bad mood....Sorry...
I know in the MSF any full face helmeted riders had to have sunglasses on if they raised their shield while riding....sounds similar...

Does that apply in NY as well?
Yeah, works that way here too. If the cop doesn't show then they'll dismiss the ticket regardless. I've heard stories of the cops "never" showing up to court, but right now I'm 2 for 2 with officer attendance. So we'll see. I'll definitely let you guys know the outcome.
My concern now is that my court date is going to be scheduled for the worst day possible. Like the day I'm set to leave for Hawaii in August. That'll be the kicker...if I'm the friggin' one not to show up.

Thing is...they actually seem to be targeting sportbikes.
I was outside my mechanic's shop yesterday when another guy there got a ticket for the license plate on a gixxer...while the mechanic was working on it. Guy wasn't riding, bike wasn't parked on the street, it was on the sidewalk of the mechanic's shop, he was looking at it and the cops just came up and ticketed him.
The cops said they were a special detail...just looking for bikes.
Sucks about the ticket. I usually ride in Manhattan with my shield up but I wear glasses.

No cruiser v.s. Sport thing here, I mentioned Dual sports and cafe racers on the no violation list.
Bikes covered with fairings seem to be harrassed so much and I guess it had something to do with an old editorial on how speeding "race" bikes are ruining a neighborhood.
Besides, in Nassau County, NY they love targeting custom cruisers even ones customized with chrome only get impounded for improper VIN...

That's a total bullshit law. Whoever came up with it should be punched in the throat. It's ridiculous there are laws like that and still nothing against people driving with cellphones or driving while eating.
Is there somewhere the average person even find all these laws listed?
Good luck with your court date. With something like this I think it would be fine to lie and get out of it. Tell them you had a bug under your lid so you flipped it up to brush the bug off or something.

Think that stories tops mine. That's just plain wrong.

Here in New York, we do have a cell phone law. Can only talk on the phone while driving if using a handsfree device or earpiece. I've got my $90 ticket with complimentary 2pts on my license to prove it. And get this. The ticket itself was $40, but there's a $50
surcharge.
There is a helpful site that lists each state's motorcycle laws provided by rider friendly AMA.

My favorite one (which will probably be the next bogus ticket I get) is the law about the muffler. I'll be writing telling you guys about the cop who pulled me over and took out his high-tech sound measuring device.
Muffler - Muffler required; no straight pipes; no removal of baffles; no modification of exhaust system that increases noise beyond exhaust system originally installed. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 9, Section 381
Maximum Sound Level - Maximum Allowable A-Weighted Sound Levels at Speed: 35 mph or less, 82 dB(A); over 35 mph, 86 dB(A), measured at, or adjusted to, a distance of fifty feet from the center of the lane in which the motorcycle is traveling. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 10, Section 386.

He probably did think you stole the bike - used the faceshield issue as a means to justify pulling you over. Still, I believe that with most people a kind, yet stern warning will yield far better results that just issuing tickets. However, when a city has bills to pay...
Too bad you were the one to get popped. I would try the "only open an inch" defense. You'll be admitting to an open faceshield, but implying that your eyes were still protected. Just be cool.
Cheers,
Loonette
