When I was 18 I laid down my dad's '82 Nighthawk 750 going about 50km/hr in a right hand turn. I slid to a stop on my butt and the side of my leg, and didn't even really damage the jeans.

/ just sayin'

(the bike was another story )

yet more anecdotal Jean evidence:

i personally crashed at around 25-30kmph in the MSF lot and tore a hole through my jeans in no time, i hit directly on my knee and have a lovely circular scar to show exactly how deep the roadrash was there...total length of skid was maybe 5 feet.

Skin < Jeans < Textile < Leather

They said after 100 feet at 35MPH the jeans were worn down and had one small rip but were not leaking sand and were completely wearable...NOT "ripped like tissue" as many claim.

Haven't tried it myself and can't find the link now...

I can say for a fact that this is total BS. I fell off the bike on my knee at the MSF course. The jeans tore on impact. I slid maybe a few feet, but that was enough to cause road rash.

On the other hand, I was wearing regular leather gloves and the left one now has a scuff mark where road rash would have been.

there could be a correlation between surface area and the shred factor of denim

a 100 pound denim bag of sand will have more surface area than say a typical crash where your knee acts as the first and primary point of contact.

Hard to say. I guess what we really need to do is dress a pig up in denim, tie him to the back of a truck with a length of rope, get up to speed, toss him off, and drag him for a while then check the damages.

It would probably "pee" of the SPCA or some fraternal order though... :(

I was thinking the same thing. Gotta account for the force on the impact area.

Someone mentioned up there about Ben should be using this opportunity to make cagers aware - I agree with that. Unfortunately, Ben probably doesn't ride enough to have that mentality of cagers are inattentive. To him, this was just a random accident. To motorcyclists, this is just another notch on the pole of "stupid inattentive cager hits bike".

though jeans dont have great impact resistance they do prevent a lot of road rash, I dropped that bike doing 90 and yes my jeans did wear through and I got minor road rash but 90% of the crash was on my helmet and jacket. Sure my knee hurt but no one needs cosmetic surgery on their knees. If I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts I would have been in the hospital for a while.
