What would make sense is not making the bikes illegal, it would be creating very stiff penalties for breaking the law on a bike.

Caught going 130 on a Hayabusa? Lose your bike, lose your motorcycle license for 5 years, mandatory jail time.

Yikes. Any law like that goes on the books here, and my bike is in the next Bike Trader issue.

Drug dealers are dealt with pretty harshly. Not to derail this too much, I think they should be dealth with more harshly, but I also think drugs should be legalized. Not so sure about prostitution though.

I don't think that very stiff penalties for doing double the legal maximum speed on public roadways is a bad thing.

Hrm, so any time you get a speeding ticket with any vehicle you lose the vehicle, lose your licence for 5 years, and go to jail? Or are you just descriminating against MC or Sportbike riders? And who's to determine what's "too fast"? I think the system is fine like it is

As far as I know there is a penalty for doing double the speed limit on a roadway. You pay alot of money and (usually) lose your licence. Want to have to amputate your arm on top of that as well?

And I like how you solidified your arguement with the legalizing drugs comment. That's exactly what we need, doped up squids doing double the speed limit!

No. That's not what I said at all. I dunno how you extrapolate "get caught doing 130mph on a bike" to "speeding over the limit in any way in any vehicle." I also don't know how you extrapolate further to something as extreme as mandatory amputation.

This is full of logical fallacies that have nothing to do with my post. I'm definitely in favor of stiff penalties for people who severely abuse the public roadways with any type of vehicle. I think the punishment should be even stiffer if you're caught on a public roadway going that fast in a car, as the hazard to the public is greatly, greatly increased by a vehicle that large. If you get caught doing 130 in an Enzo, you *should* lose your license and you *should* go to jail.

As for the drugs thing, in general I believe that we should be allowed to do whatever we want to ourselves, but the penalties for placing other lives in danger should be severe. Therefore, drunk driving, driving or riding while impaired through use of recreational drugs, driving or riding in a way that creates a serious hazard to other motorists, etc, should be dealt with very harshly, but getting high and drunk in the privacy of one's own home is every person's right.

I'm not at all in favor of preventing misuse of something by preventing said something entirely.

Well if we are going to let people do whatever they want to themselves we should ban free emergency healthcare first

Funny thing.. at my MSF class on Tuesday, my instructor was a big sport bike guy. He loves to go fast.

He was talking about how he used to get speeding tickets all the time.. then he started going to the track. Now he goes to the track regularly and the desire to speed on the highways has completely subsided, since the track is so much better. He said he hasn't gotten a speeding ticket since.

It's certainly a lot safer, both for you and for other people on the road. He may have been completely making it up, but it might be something to try.
