I never thought of riding with my jacket open. That to my mind set is like wearing my helmet with out the strap tied down. I have two jackets - 1 for very hot (mesh) and one for the rest of the year (leather). I never leave the jacket unfastened unless I'm off the bike.

But personal safety is a very personal thing. You decide what you want to do in the end. I rarely wear riding pants, and I know there are people here who would never ride without riding pants or a suit, so to each his own level of protection.

Do you even know WTF we're talking about, or do you just like to make stupid comments at random?

I suggest you go read the Hurt report, and some of the other accident studies which indicate that the *VAST* majority of accidents happen at speeds that couldn't rip the jacket off of an armless grandma. The thought of having your jacket "ripped off" during a crash has practically no basis in reality.

Seriously, think about what has to happen for a jacket to come off of you. If you hit the ground hard enough for an open jacket to be ripped from your body, you will be SIGNIFICANTLY messed up in much worse ways. Arm abrasions are the least of your worries in that case.

True. Let it be noted I'm not condoning the practice, just saying that the "OMG JACKET RIPPED OFF BODY LOL!!!!" fear is highly dubious.

I wear a spine and chest protector (ICON Field Armor) and that's also the reason why I don't unzip. I don't want people thinking I'm packing heat.

if not done up properly at the wrists the sleeves will ride up on you and i have a nice scar to prove it from about 20-25mph fall when i took my course. the rest of the jacket pretty much stayed in place though.

at low speed impacts even a half open jacket "should" stay on you...at significant speeds like 90mph or so, i think all bets would be off as to what could/would happen with tumbling body and bike there are enough chances to get hung up on something before you stop that you just never know.

If you're crashing at 90 MPH, your jacket coming off is the LEAST of your worries.

I love it when someone with no grounding in reality starts commenting on what is an isn't possible.

Go take your pills and chill out.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

i dont ride with a jacket, but there are no big interstates close to me. I typically ride with jeans and a short sleve shirt and my umbros. People call me stupid for not wearing leather or any of that stuff, but at least i got a helmet. i dont plan on falling so why bother?
