if the stores in your area stock decent helmets but just don't have your size, they can always order you one in. when you buy your helmet, if it's a full face, buy one with a removeable liner. this way if it gets smelly from sweating in it, you can take it out and wash it.

not sure what brands they stock there so it would be tough to recommend but here are some basics around here:

high end price ($700+): shoei, arai
middle price ($200-$700): HJC, KBC, Shark
low price(< $200): not sure, probably wouldn't buy a helmet this cheap

shoei are in the $300-$400 range not $700+

prices i was going by were canadian.
shoei in canada are around 650 and up depending on design
bike banditshows them between $400 and $692
so i was generalizing but not completely off target.

I've ridden with the 1/2 and 3/4 helments. a few june bugs, gravel, wasps, bumblebees, hailstones, cigarrette butts, and 70mph wind being channeled into the edge of my eyeballs, well that made my decision for me.

to heck with what it looks like. Of course you could get a modular so that you can flip the whole shebang up at stoplights/stores. Just picked up a GMAX for 85$. a couple of weeks ago. felt good riding in the car. since my frackin bike insists on thumbing its nose at me this year

I also ride a cruiser and I wear a full face helmet.

When I was younger and didn't ride my dad was big on the 3/4th helmets. I actually prefer and use a full face. If I'm going off my bike, I'd like to make sure I keep my face as is. . Plus, it helps keep out the bugs and other assorted items that fly into your face.

Half helmet: I have an HJC AC-2 which I find to be a great helmet. It fits very comfortably - fellls about like wearing a baseball hat. For cooler weather, it has a zip-on neck liner to keep my neck and ears warm. You can find these on sale for around $80. I usually don't wear this one around the city as I figure my danger of being hit is higher in the city. But it's a great touring helmet on my fully faired bike.

Full helmet: I have three Arai Quantum helmets. If an Arai fits your head, it's a great helmet. Known for being one of the safest helmets made and VERY comfortable (again, if the shape fits your head.) In fact, this helmet is so comfortable that on my fully faired bike, I have to be careful as this helmet is so lightweight and comfortable that it will actually let me fall asleep while riding.

Flip-up: I have a Schuberth Concept flip face helmet. I like this helmet for riding in the city during hot weather as I can flip it open to get some air if I'm stopped or traffic is really slow but when I'm riding faster I flip it down and have full protection. It's also good for running errands as you can just flip it open and not have to take the helmet off for running into a store.

Your face, your rules. If you think a full-face is the way to go, then that's what you should buy. Ignore the "cool" factor because it has absolutely nothing to do with your own personal safety.

Having said that, I wear a 1/2 helmet most of the riding season on both of my bikes, because I find a full-face too claustrophobic and hot for my tastes. I do, however, wear a full-face in colder weather on my Ural AND on my Harley. Only had one snide comment so far about that from another rider; I told him "my face, my rules" in response.

After starting out with a 3/4 helmet and having bugs,etc. hit me in the face I put a flip up shield on it. I ride a cruiser and never let the thought cross my mind about what was in style. Who cares? Like they have all said "it's your face". I just recently purchased a Scorpion helmet, full face, for a very reasonable price and I now wear it exclusively. I won't go back to the 3/4, it will just have to be a spare!
