replace the first [ with <
so you would get <img src= "
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hawk_tiff ... pg&.src=ph" />
odd I have never had this not work?
either way when you use the [img] tags you must have a file name for it like
http://mywebsite/jen.jpg otherwise the img src tags should work but for some reason they are not??????.
as for gear it all depends on how you feel your worth. I plan on spending $400 on my helmet $300 on my jacket and $160 on my pants. Probably $100 on my boots as well. thats about $1000
php boards don't like HTML all that much - thats why it failed.
redfeather - if you replace the URL in your signature with
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hawk_tiff ... 847re2.jpg - it'll work just fine.

you want to make sure your gear fits TIGHT and SNUG. also remember that leather will eventually get looser the more you wear it, so if you think a size is too small, it probably isn't..as long as you can fit in it.
gear is expensive and eventually you'll want to upgrade and all
good luck!

Buy the best you can afford, that fits reasonably, now.
Don't worry about getting 'the best' features, etc for this first set up, because chances are that you will change your mind about at least some of the things that seem important.
As you gain experience you'll get a better idea of what works for you and your type of riding. Upgrade later as you can afford to, and make more meticulous choices about features.
It never hurts to have more than one option in the closet. I've got 3 jackets and 4 pairs of riding pants, plus two pairs of boots and about 5-6 pairs of gloves.
