tell that to 85% of the engineers out there and they will just laugh at you. But I agree with you :D.

My bike has an autocancel. BUT my previous bike didn't. I got in the habit of just randomly hitting the cancel switch as I go down the road.

The habit of cancelling at upshift is a really good one. Its what I am in the habit of doing.

After following someone on group ride who's signal was on for a good 5 miles. I realized that it can be dangerous to forget.

Good, I'm not the only one who does that. :) Even after I've checked the indicator, I'm still cancelling...
i've even caught myself pushing the damn thing even after i've been on a straightaway for miles.
I do the exact same thing.
I just figure better safe than sorry, i guess.

I had the same problem when i first got my bike a little over a month ago. But I think you hit it on the head of the nail with your comment "too many things to worry about". The more I ride some of the many worries that I initially had, have gone away. Now its almost a ritual ( as someone commented) in cancelling my signal. Close to 100 % of the time 8) But you're absolutely right there are too many things to worry about when you first start off. Alot of those things are becoming second nature to me.
