Mirrors will only tell you when danger is there. You can't rely on them to tell you it's safe.

I'm trying to add convex inserts to the corner of my stock rectangular mirrors. Unfortunately I have limited rom in my neck looking to the left. I wouldn't completely rely on them, but they would offer, as someone already mentioned, a good view for situational awareness. Convex can be hard to judge distance between objects, so depth perception could really take a hit if you tried to soley rely on convex mirrors.

Riding or driving, I wouldn't completely rely on anything short of a head check.

The only silly questions are those that go unasked.

+1 to what Spinner mentioned...and just about everyone else--alot of good answers. Remember:

MIRRORS ONLY SAY "NO"...

If your thinking about a lane change, check your mirror. If you see someone, don't waste your concentration on a lifesaver, (a quick head turn).

If you don't see anything in your mirror, pull a lifesaver, then execute your move if it's good.

Of course, there are a million different variations and other factors to keep in mind, (emergency maneuver, weather, behavior of others, if your tired, etc...); this is just a quick synopsis
Courage is embracing your fear and seeking its point of origin...but stupid is just plain stupid.

bar ends looks crappy plus it will bother my lane splitting.

it's a good option to those who don't mind the look and don't lane split.

remind me to post how much your riding style looks crappy in a post that doesn't concern you and your bike Verm/CR...oh wait i just did.

you may not like them, and i really don't have a need for them either, but the OP may get some use out of them if they can't position their normal mirrors to see anything behind them.

I was going to suggest bar ends as well. Plus they have the added benefit of looking better then standard mirrors, and you can mount them in all sorts of ways to adjust your view.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

+1 bar end mirrors, my mirrors did this wonderfull job of looking straight at my biceps, no good. bare end mirrors give me a clear veiw all the way around, suprisingly, in each one. I have my right side mirror set up for full tuck and my left mirror for the rest of the time
