Seriously. Go to LensCrafters or Wal Mart or whatever and see an eye doctor and get some contacts. You'll be surprised.
i know.
but i heard a scary thing though that once you start wearing glasses/contacts, it will deteriorate your sight even worse and you're gonna need to constantly get a higher grade lens.

is that true?
ppffftt no thats called old age. even me with my 20/15 vision I will probably have to have glasses when I reach my 40's.
Sorry to hear of your condition. My mother has this and it's not a pretty picture. I hope they can slow the process down for you as much as possible. In the mean time, live life to it's fullest and enjoy every moment.
ofblong wrote:well I was diagnosed today with macular degeneration. apparently it is stopped with laser surgery in 2/3's of all cases. What it is is the nerve endings growing into the retina causing blind spots. So I am hoping that it was caught early enough that the eye doc was able to get all of the problem area so it will stop growing. it is very rare for someone under 50 (I am 27) to get this but it does happen. It is apparently very common in people over 70. So for me I am going to ride as often as I can till I can no longer ride lol. You never know if it may start growing back (the nerve endings). I have a permanent blind spot because of it but id rather have a small blind spot then go completly blind. Although if I go completly blind I will get long term disability for a while but I would rather not have to go that route if I can help it.
Do any of you ride with partial blindness that glasses/contacts cant fix? I still have 20/15 vision even with this blind spot.

No... and at your age, your eyes should be pretty stable and not change much more. Mine leveled out around 21, and I've been wearing glasses/contacts since 4th grade. It has more to do with age.

No, and in some cases contacts help your eyes stay at their current level.

hmm thanks for the comment . I have been doing lots of reading and everything points to if it is found early enough and burned out with laser surgery early enough it can actually be stopped. However the % of those that get stopped is conflicting. some say 2/3rds of all patients the growth is stopped with laser surgery and some say 1/3rd of all patients it is stopped. Unfortunaltly some of those sites dont give dates for when the site was last updated so it is kind of hard to see which is false or not. I know the doc who did my surgery (this is actually my first ever surgery of any kind) said 2/3rds of all patients the growth is stopped. I hope im in the 2/3rds .

You heard wrong. Your eyes will deteriorate more rapidly by not having the contacts because it strains your eyes to have to focus on things that they, more or less, cannot.
And the only reason your prescription would change is because your eyes are still developing. But at 25, that shouldn't be happening.
Do the others on the road, and yourself, a great favor by seeing an optometrist. You really will be surprised by how much clearer everything is after that.
Have fun on the open /¦\
