US big-wigs take note, this isn't the first nor the last time you hear it,
we want small diesels!
Ford do a 1600cc Diesel unit that is unbeatable. My mum had a unit in her '85 Orion that just ran and ran and ran... Damned thing was indestructable. Even when she lent it to Dad.
Thinking about it Dad had a 1600cc Diesel uint in his Renault 5 at the time, which is why he used to tow the caravan with it.

2000 ford ranger... yeah... 2wd, reg cab, short bed. basically, useless, can hardly fit my XR in the back. I want a car. Someone wanna donate to the "Get Geoff a VW Rabbit (Golf to the rest of the world) fund""
And Scan, my friend Pulski has a 04 WRX wagon. Incredible car. Sounds beautiful with just ram air alone. 2" drop on 17" BBS rims with Falken Z rated rubbers. Grips like a mother steamwhistle, goes like sin. STi axle back (think slip on) is in the works soon.
He needs to increase the boost, and get some 3" piping for it, so it sounds like a squirrel eating demon.

WJ Brake problem with the front end, yes? There's a new caliper kit you can buy to supposedly fix the warping but I've heard mixed results. If you plan on keeping the car for a while, I think slotted rotors do better in the front end of the WJ.
S80 is a 2002.
I love it.
Seats are suppose to be the best in the industry- I can drive across the US w/out a problem! Power is ok- no muslce on this Volvo, but i think thats how they are made- i know that the s80 T6 is suppose to really fly!
interior is nice, sound system is bloody awsome- i think its an Alpine system- enough amps to crank my Social Distortion/Tiger Army songs. Handles well and dampens the road pretty good compared to similar cars. The car does feel a little big, but i have gotten use to it. All in all, i love my Volvo-Maintance is a tad expensive ( i think they charge like $105 per hour here in Chicago for service). I ended up getting the gold color, but i think there is some official volvo term for thier color scheme ( like sierra sand or some crap like that). I think once Ford purchased Volvo, people stopped comparing Volvo's Vs. Mercs/BMW/ Lexus and started comparing them to full sized cars instead, which kind of hurts retail value. I think if you look in the right places, you can find those 1st generation Volvos somewhere from about $8,000-13,000 with ave. milage.
i dont think you can go wrong w/ the s80s! good luck!

Social, thanks for the review! I plan on a 01-02 with <100k and a budget of 10k. I see loads of them on the market for that. Not really interested in 'power', my current 6 cylinder Jeep GC has the acceleration of a dump truck, but I prefer to baby the gas pedal anyway. I am dragging the wife down to a local dealer to test drive one tomorrow. I heard the 99-00 models had transmission and electrical problems, but I expect that in the first couple of years of a new model (apparently thats when Volvo redid alot of their electrical work in all their cars, which didn't help I'm sure).
Not surprised about the service rate on an import as 'technical' as the S80. Once you get passed the electronics and avoid tripping the darn computers its still all nuts and bolts though.

my other vehicle is a 2001 Chevy Prizm (aka toyota corolla), great little car, handles like a sports car though is a tad sluggish in the power dept (very hampered by the auto tranny). Gets great gas milage and is very comfortable for being a small car. Have had zero problems with it. If it had a manual tranny it would be a great little backroad blaster.
I also had a 73 VW beetle that was going to be a project car until the left side was introduced to a dodge intrepid a couple of years ago. Sold it recently.

2003 Chevy Impala
I don't care for it either way. It has some really nice pick-up on it around the 4th or 5th gears (it's an automatic so I dont' know for sure) but aside from that, nothing to write home about.
I should've gotten a Mazda 6. It's what I wanted, but I didn't get it, and now I'm stuck with an Impala.
Ah well.
