I use my bike to pick up the mail at the mail box. Hrm, then again it is on my way to where ever im going. (My mailbox is like three blocks down the street, right at the exit in my neighborhood)
lay off me... my 1st bike was stolen.
if i get a commuter bike, it won't be a sportbike. i want a DRZ400SM for commuting.
I was only joking, actually I just realised I forgot the emoticon in my post... and seriously I really did forget, not just harping on ya about your other post about emoticons
lets put it this way because I calculated my expenses out already.
I rode my bike 1100 miles this summer (august/september/most of october). I spent $55 on gas which is about 20 miles per dollar of gas. My van I would have spent $150 on gas which equates to about 7 miles to a dollar of gas. hmm almost 3x the miles for the same gas?????
Honestly my Honda shadow gets 55mpg
then for insurance I get 1000/yr for my van to have full coverage with a $500 deductable. my bike with no deductable for a year is $330. The tire thing isnt a savings over a car vs bike because you cant go as far on 1 set of tires on a bike than you can on a vehicle. I can go 50k miles on a set of tires on my van. My bike I can maybe go 20k miles so in essance I am spending the same amount on tires for the bike that I do for my cage.
Can't find the page now, saw t yesterday though, zuki claims their GZ250 gets 82 per gallon.
I'd expect something similar from the other 250's in the crowd.
I do know my 600 katana used right at 1/4 tank of a 5 gallon tank on my commute. was 50 miles each way at 7k rpms though. With a fat guy on the poor little thing. And im sure a crappy tuning job. You caa make huge differences in your fuel use by how you drive, where you drive, how much you stick into the air, heck whether its cold that day, humid....

That's why I didn't suggest that you should be commuting on the bike, because you don't feel comfortable doing it, I probably would either if my bike got pinched.
what is "mang?"
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

it's "man" w/ a latino accent.
i have just been watching scarface movie and playing scarface the videogame.
Here's the thing. It's not just about gas savings or the additional insurance, maintenance or whatever. I have 2 toyota tercels (a 93 and a 96) so the gas savings isn't as great as if I were driving an SUV or larger vehicle, but what is important is the fact that in the last 2 years I've only put about 3000miles on each car. I've put a little over 17,000 miles on my Rebel (80mpg) and 9000 miles on my S50 (52mpg). I have no idea how long these cars will last now. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll even have to buy another car in the next 10 years. If you normally get another car every 6 to 8 years and you suddenly find yourself keeping the same car for 20 years (had the 93 for 12 years already) that savings is huge. Instead $15,000 to $20,000 every 8 years your doing it every 20 or so. The more you ride your motorcycle the better off you'll be. I'd much rather put $10,000 in bikes per decade and $20,000 into a car every20 years then turning cars over every 6 to 8 years. It's economically sound and a hell of alot more fun.
Indeed! I've put only about 2,000 miles on my SUV in the past year, since if the wife and I go anywhere it is usually in her more economical car.
At this rate we will be buying her a new car every 4-5 years but mine should last darn near forever.

I put 20,000 miles on my Yamaha Majesty sccooter last year commuting 150 miles per day. The Majesty got 60 mpg. My car is a Kia Sportage. It get's 25 MPG. I figure I saved enough on gas to justify the bike. Having the bike also freed up the car, so my wife could work a part time job.
I have been surprised that my BMW K1200LT is getting right at 50 mpg on the same trip. Actually the last tank I figured was 54 MPG. (168 miles mostly on the interstate, on 3.1 gals.)
