A few weeks ago I was waiting in a ferry lineup just behind 2 couples and their big bikes. At first the two men were chatty and talking about the bike and asking me stuff about the area ( they had ridden in from Alberta), then I remembered this thread.
At first the two women appeared somewhat "snotty", but I made a special effort to talk to them. They "warmed up" a bit after they realized I was just as friendly sort of person who talked to everyone....and not just other women's men.
Even if they hadn't warmed up, it didn't mean I had to be a snob, too.

Y'know it could be that the pillion women CAN'T 'talk motorcycles' like the guys can, so they get left out. Could be that they're feeling left out and unhappy that YOU can talk to their men like THEY can't.

Sorry for jumping in on the ladies talk, but I agree with you on this Lion_Lady. I think there is a whole dynamic between riders and those who know their bikes. If you just pillion and never take interest in learning what you are riding you might feel left out. I do have to say I've met quite a few guys who ride who don't seem to know jack about bikes though.

I know this sounds slightly "junior high", but if I notice a lady riding pillion, and her man is asking me about my bike and so on, I will try and give some sort of attention to his partner. I will pick out something about her that I truly do like, and I will compliment on it. Like, wow, that's a really cool jacket you've got - where did you get that?" At least then I'm making an effort to connect with her as another woman. Just like breaking the ice in any other social situation, it helps when people simply feel included in some way. If they still seem to have any type of attitude, I'll just move on and enjoy the rest of my day.

Cheers,
Loonette

I've had quite a few guys tell me, "There's nothing sexier than a woman riding a bike". I think that's the real reason behind those "looks". This thread is very interesting! I think everyone's responses are correct, each in its own way.
I know that since I started riding, I've turned quite a few more heads than I ever have while driving my mini-van! As someone else said, it's not because I'm some sexy babe - I'm 5'7", 225 lbs. There is definitely something sexual about a woman "riding" a bike, straddling it, making it go at her whim. Confidence. Control. Self assurance. All necessary for riding, and all very sexy attributes! :righton:

Now I'll say what my mom told me in school "Why should you care what other people think".
But contray to popular belief, mommy's don't know everything. I have learned women, women without fun or self esteem, are scary. And their dirty looks can freez hell over, but don't worry about them. Besides... you say you weren't always as cool and beautiful as you are now. Maybe these "hardcore" chicks where just like the ones causing you pain in school. It all boils down to one thing:

Karma is a "dog". (cookie isn't what I typed. starts with a b)
So have a good time with what you gave yourself. A fun life, good rides, and confidence.

With your permission Ladies, my wife rides pillion and has also experianced "the look" but just as well gets on other lady pillions and lady riders. I find this thread insightfull because as a man I will never understand the fairer sex, but my wife claims she does and explains that no matter what or where, bikes, the gym, soccer moms and so on there will always be a portion of women who for whatever reason have a low self esteem of them selves and will try really hard to bring others around them down to that level. These ladies are just not happy with themselves and thats their problem. My wife is happy with who she is, how she looks, with life in general, her role as a mom, in her business and yet has no desire whatsoever to ride a bike herself. We have discussed this and she say's she enjoys the freedom and excitement of biking but would rather leave the responibility of arriving safely to me. She does take an interest and weighs her panniers to the max weight knowing it could affect the bike if the weight is uneven, she knows the tyre pressures and how much fuel it takes. She has gone past the fashion stage and believes in being fully protected, full leathers, boots, gloves full face helmet. And she can have a conversation with lady riders about their bikes. Two things I have noticed. The manufacturers are aiming both at pillion riders and lady riders with their machines. I think they know that this is a natural progression and we are going to see a lot more of both.
