Yup. Got a couple dozen of 'em. Pam's right, they don't slide - I've hit 'em hundreds of times, never once has the bike wiggled. (When I was beginning I'd hit more cones than I'd miss!)

Yeah, but the Va DMV test is ridiculously easy. The best way to hone your skills is start in a parking lot where you can guage things by parking spots. Setup something you can do and once you master it make it harder. Don't go too far in one go but before you know it slow speed manuevers will be no issue at all.

... but set them further apart for high speed manuevers

I don't mean to be condescending, but I was very amused at the first few posts in this thread.

"How do I practice weaving between cones?"

"Use some cones..."

"Holy #$%#!!! You have cones?!?!"

"...."

You'd think Shorts had suggested using 6" tall piles of diamonds or something.

Sorry!

Piles of diamonds is what they use in the advanced rider course....

lol

I don't know, at ERC, the pinhead instructor thought imaginary cones and dots were more than sufficient for cornering patterns

I find an empty parking lot and use the paint stripe ends and intersections. When I took the BRC I was often behind this very slow lady, so I'd not just weave around the cones, since the cone spacing matched the stripes, I would weave over the ends and intersections two spaces beyond each cone. The instructor asked what I was doing, so I told him I was trying to maintain a safe distance behind the rider in front of me. He just said, "Okay."

I got so good at that low speed stuff so fast that during the double u-turn part of the test I only used half the length of the box and maybe 2/3s the width. I had to swerve left and back right like a lane change to get over to the exit cones.

in the drills (that you're not tested on) you start with that setup then they move the cones to like 4-6 feet. That one's a B* to get through.

We've also got a bag full old tennis balls sawed in half. THEY were FREE from a tennis club but we had to saw them ourselves, kind of a PITA.

Those are exactly the kind we picked up. They have a spiral design cut into them, so des ne? (is that right?)
Mine are nearly flat and just have a hole in the middle. I know the spiral ones you speak of, they're taller than these.

Hey i know I am a bit late in this. But get cones or soda cans or whatever comes in handy as the others said. The cones at the course are about 15 feet apart with a three foot offset.

They look something like this.
