The biggest blade I have is in my leatherman tool. :) If you go around and mind your own business, there is probably no need to have a weapon.

It might be a different story if you're in a gang, but just a regular person going about their business...Why would you need one?

I'm posting this separately so that the two posts won't color eachother.

Just my .02, and yes, this time it will really be .02

I'm gonna have to back up geoff and say that I put more faith in shot placement (through lesser recoil) than single bullet stopping power.
I'm starting a petition to cull narrowminded dull people - be afraid Peter, be very afraid....

There's a psycheological effect it has on you. Just knowing that if you needed it, it's there for you brings a nice sense of security. Now, are you ever going to need it for self defense? Probably not. And these are my KNIFES i'm thinking about.

I'm going to get my FID somepoint soon and get a shotgun. Pump, preferably 20" or shorter barrel. Why? Well, i live in a bad area. And we have been broken into before (no one was home). So have our neighboors. Would i confront a robber with a shotgun? You bet your "O Ring" i would. Why? Because it's not just myself here. There's 5 other people who sleep here on a regular basis. Three of which are female. All 5 are good friends, and yes, I'd do anything to make sure they're safe. What if it's NOT me who confronts someone who's breaking in? What if the robber is armed? I'm personally prepared to deal with the consquences of shooting and possibly killing somebody if it means the others don't have to deal with a gun pointed, and possibly fired at them. Moreso considering 3 of them are girls (2 of which might as well as be blood for the connection we have) so I'm compelled to WANT to protect them moreso than a male friend.

PS - I would LOVE to own a 1911. It's probably my favorite gun out there, next to the model of Thompsons used in WWII. Hell, they're so awsome, Chuck Norris carries them in pretty much all his movies and in Walker, Texas Ranger.

my god, if that was real you could practically power the bike with the recoil alone... not to mention vaporising any tailgaters

- single female alone
- single female with one good arm
- female target
- a target

Of course, part of the common sense and reducing the risks of being in the wrong place at the wrong time is to know your surrounding and make smart choices on when and where to be. Like sone said, why do you keep a fire extinguisher in the house? Why would you wear a helmet when riding? Why do you wear a seatbelt when driving. Its a precautionary measure to protect yourself.

As forthe consequences of carrying a knife. There should be no reason you are found with one where you shouldn't haev one. Semantics here, but concealed is concealed. Legal or not, no one should know that you do have it in your pocket. Of course, situations can take a turn and all of a sudden you're being searched (whatever you did to deserve that, that's all you), there's no stopping it.

Part of carrying any weapon is getting through the initial feeling of being watched and feeling guilty. That subsides with time. Be legal. Be smart. I don't see what the big scare is of these "consequences". What are you afraid of?

Me? Personally I see nothing wrong with concealed carry be it a knife or gun. Many of the possible consequences are just that, possible consequences that most likely will not happen. I'm just saying that someone should think about all of the things that can happen before they decide to carry to see if for them it is worth it. What I fear most is someone doing stupid things that they will regret later, and I willingly admit that most will not. I'm saying that someone should be aware of the possible consequences, that may or may not exist for them, so they can make an informed decision.

As for getting caught with a knife, while it is perfectly legal for me to carry one, and I do, there is the possiblity of having to explain to a cop why I have it, or to try and get it back if it is confiscated. Which is a hassle. Granted they would have to search me first but as a young male dressed head to toe in black there is a much higher chance of them searching me than them searching you, even if I am doing nothing wrong.

A classic example would be when I was walking through the mall on my way to play pool and was surrounded by security. Turned out they though my pool cue case was some kind of sword sheath. If I had been dressed differently most likely they would have left me alone because they would have stopped to think about what else the case could have been. Or at least given me the benefit of the doubt.

I've carried a kite in it's case and had people think it was a rifle, even though it was an inch wide and two yeards long. They just look at me and assume. For me the possibility of being searched is very real.

I'm not saying anything against carrying a weapon, I'm just saying that people should think about how their individual situation varies and that they should see if for them it is worth while. For me when I'm in the US it is, but for the person who started the tread it might not be, only they can decide. If a person is mature and cool headed the most they have to worry about is a civil suit after using justified force, but only you can decide if you are mature enough to carry.
