yeah, there is such a thing as too quiet. the sales manager and i took a couple bikes out for a shake down ride, he on a stratoliner and i on a fjr1300. we were sitting at a country intersection shooting the "poo poo" and it wasn't until he took off that i realized the damn thing had died on me. the stratoliner had stock pipes on it, but the fjr is way too quiet.

My bike came with HK Strippers on it. When the bike fired up in the stealership, I thought it was way too loud for me. But I quickely decided I love that sound and wouldn't trade it for anything. Especially after I heard the stock pipes -- sounds a bit like a sewing machine by comparison.

I like 'em hardy, not annoying.

I know I'm new here, but I just wanted to put my .02 in. I presently ride a Road King, but I had a Suzuki Intruder 1400 with 2.5 " drag pipes. I agree they were too loud, but they did save me from a potentially bad accident.

I was making a left turn on to a main roadway. I was in the right lane of a 4 lane road (US Highway 1 in Florida). I was beside a large truck with a vehicle in front of me and behind me. The truck started to move over into my lane. I had no where to go. The shoulder of the road was full of broken asphalt and soft sand (Ouch!!). I could see the driver in his outside mirror, and he was not looking my way. I clutched it and opened the throttle. Needless to say, he noticed me then and corrected himself. Those pipes saved me that day.

I'm putting Rinehart True Dual pipes on my Road King as soon as I can afford them.

Wouldn't a horn have been better at this?

With the size of the truck and the amount of noise coming from the truck, no. The horn on the bike sounded like a weak bicycle horn.

Please understand, I'm not justifying loud pipes. I'm just saying they saved me from a potentially bad accident.

What does it matter? The point was to get the driver's attention before getting run off the road.

And most of the "loud" pipes I have heard are louder than the POS horns they put on motorcycles. They really need to put bigger/louder horns on bikes.

A super-loud horn is cheaper than a super-loud exhaust system.

Not to mention quicker to activate.

Did you modify the exhaust on your car to be super-loud so you can alert other vehicles by dropping the clutch and revving your engine, or do you just use your horn there?

Just seems to me that a good horn is a better solution. Louder, more recognizable as an alert, and doesn't "pee" everyone else off the rest of the time.

Maybe I'm missing the point though. Perhaps I should think about doing something like this with my car.
