I say WEAR the helmet.

I wear one all the time NYS LAW. (hence the problem) but i would still wear one..

As far as gear. I don't have much for gear. But I will be buyin stuff soon.. Mostly a good comfortable coat..

gloves I need to..

Other then that i wear shorts when its very hot out and cargo (sometimes thick) style pants.. I only ride my bike literaly a few miles at a time.. Cept sundays I ride a bit longer but wear a sweat shirt and pants..

again

WEAR A HELMETide rather bang my head on the ground in a helmet than my head on the ground. You can't controll how the accident ends up either.

Ihad a small accident once on a bike (small).. I was riding a little PW 80 (3 speed/automantic. Did not know about the rear brake.. I slid and fell and head hit the ground very hard (enough to give me an instant headache) BUT i was wearing a helmet. If no helmet im sure i would be in major pain . (ohh and i did say small accident). But hurt like hell.

I'll tell you why I wear a helmet. (well, there's lots of reasons, but this is the biggest one)

When I was 10 I got my best friend into dirtbikes and we would ride for hours and hours every chance we got. He started on a 78 XR-75 (cool bike, I want to find one) and rode it for 4 years. Then he got an RM-250 (too much bike for him at the time) and gave the XR to his kid brother.

One day we were at the lake waterskiing (his folks cabin and boat), and he wanted to run up to the cabin for some food. He took the XR, jumped on it with no lid and just a pair of shoes and his trunks. It was about 500 yards of footpath through the woods to the cabin. I waited at the beach with his family. He didn't come back for 30 minutes, so I jumped on my YZ and went to see what was taking him. I found him at the bottom of his driveway, where the trail lead into it. It was a tight corner and had to be taken at walking speed. He was laying beside the bike right there, with his brain showing and a the one rock for 10 miles lodged in his head.

It was the first (and only) time I have lost a friend, first time I seen a dead body, and the last time I rode without a helmet. And then I had to ride back and tell his folks..... I'll never forget that day.

Speed has nothing to do with safety. Greg was doing 5 mph tops when he crashed and died. On a mini bike.

Life is hard... wear a dam helmet.

Sorry.... rant over. But there is no good arguement for not wearing a lid.

Like I said before, I live in a college town and Indiana does not have a helmet law, so there a quite a few people who don't wear them. I was in no way trying to implicate that all people riding Busas wear no gear and are reckless. Just an observation I've made in this town. One the other day was wearing shorts and sandals, and the rear tire on his Busa had to have no more than 10 psi in it.

I think like Oldnslo said, a lot of them think they look like sissies if they are wearing a helmet. 90% of the time when they're riding two up, the girl has one on, but the operator doesn't. I actually thought like this when I first started riding. I would never wear one and thought that people that did weren't so cool. Then I wrecked and hit my head on the pavement, luckily receiving nothing more than a bump, but learning a lesson.

No helmet laws here either. Mostly cruiser folks (primarily harley) that don't wear helmets, but we have our share of sportbike squids without them also. Most everyone I ride with also wears armored jackets and a few have leather pants. We ride hard and the more out of our busas than most though so we are trying to be as prepared for the worst as we can possibly be.

Here in Uk, it is illegal not to wear a helmet, I also have my black leathers too etc. I'm glad I do wear leathers, I have Arthritis pretty much all over, and have had a couple of accidents, both were car drivers fault! If I hadn't of worn leathers, I would have broken my spine, and if I hadnt have worn a helmet, my skull would've been cracked open, cause I did get knocked out, but I got away with cuts and bruises. The 1st thing I said when I came too......"Is the bike alright?" But Dave said exactly the same thing.
But at the end of day it is personal choice and I dont like being dictated to. But if we could choose here in UK I would still wear a helmet etc But I wouldnt dictate to a person who chooses not to. I would respect their wishes. This is what we call democracy.

thats what its all about you cant go around calling people stupid for not respecting your own safety requirments, i hate when cagers call me stupid for getting on a bike its the same as another rider calling you stupid for not wearing their same level of protection.

i made fun of a crotch rocket rider that wore sandles but i was laughing at him not saying he shouldnt do it, i still think hes stupid but its his choice. calling people out because they dont wear a helmet is the same as a cage driver calling you out for riding a bike.

Well, I think there should NOT be a law saying you HAVE to wear a helmet, I think that if you feel you don't need a helmet, you shouldnt wear it. Darwinism in action.

But I cant believe that this thread is even happening. I wont even ride my bike from the driveway into the garage without a helmet. And these arguements about airbags and seatbelts doing worse than better, and a helmet not worth it, and riding "safely"...... HELLO?!? what happens when you are riding safely through an intersection when Soccer Mom runs the red and hits you, and you go flying. you would have survived with a few broken bones and some small road rash, but because you were wearing no gear, and no helmet, your head hit the pavement... not even very hard, its your HEAD, it really doesnt take much... and SPLAT.

Aw forget it, no matter what anybody says, it wont change your opinion, so its not worth it. Enjoy riding while it lasts. :o

It's always the soccer mom  Was she riding her new bike when she "hits you"?
