well i have a manual ordered and its gonna be here in a week. i ran the situation through with the guys at Pro AM in calgary here and they said it was probably a gasket situation too, as the oil leaks out higher than where the filter is.
i bought the filter and the oil anyway cause i really should take care of that, and i have an old book from the library detailing how to do it.
the one thing i guess now is finding a place to fix the gasket. problem is its like a 2 week waiting period, anndddd then the labour costs.

i wonder if i should just sell her 'for parts' and cash in my work stocks and get a new bike, or if its worth the wait and the $.
any thoughts?
anyone know of a mechanic who'd have more time on his hands and could assess the situation a little quicker than these shops?

Again, if you can get it to Edmonton I can look at it for you. And most likely do all the work Haha. Do you know which gasket is leaking/found where it's coming from? The higher up it is, the easier it will be to do.

hey guys, thought id give an update.

so i finally got a spot booked at the shop here (pro am). they asked me specifically where the oil was comin from, and i showed them (cause i did the babypowder/flour trick)
they said they didnt know what it specifically was, and to 'find out where it is coming from specifically'. i told them that was as specific as i could get.
they said about 500 bucks or so to fix it.
i didnt leave the bike there cause i didnt know if it would be worth it or not.

the repair manual doesnt show anything to do with gaskets.
im confused, and losin hope haha. is it worth it to fix this thing?

You know, a better picture of the leak area might help. From the picture you used, I can't really tell where the leak is coming from, up high (head), at cylinder to crankcase seal, at crankcase split line or at filter.

If you could get a better picture angle or 2, we might have better ideas or suggestions...

I'd be a little suspicious of a shop that says it'll be about 500 bucks to fix, when they don't even know where the oil is coming from.

It should be easy to find.Get a new oil filter and replace the o-ring and filter in front.If the bike blew a base gasket it would not run very well. Whatever it its you need to fix it before riding anymore.

hey guys.. man long time no talk. sorry to drop the ball on this thread.
i was able to get ahold of a mechanic who did some work in his back yard and came pretty highly recommended. he diagnosed the problem as being a leak in the cam chain tensioner (i belive)
he fixed that, and cleaned the carbs, changed the spark plugs, tightned the chain (something ive neglected ) also did an oil change, replaced my clutch lever and a few other little things.
the bikes runnin great.
just thought id give closure to the issue - hah thanks again for all your help guys


now.. to see if its possible (or even feesable) to put highway footpegs on this sucker haha

It's possible, it's feasible and your feet are in almost the exact same position.

I've got an Maxim 400 as well and have been looking for forward controls/highway pegs and all I've found are engine/crash bars with pegs on them.
you have to be carefull though, many of those accessories will only fit the SOHC bikes, not the DOHC Maxim
