Ive have found a few intersections like this.

or

Ill go straight through instead of doing the turn, then throw a U turn down the road a bit.


Usually when this happens its a low traffic situation cause usually there are plenty of cars around to trip the lights for you, so USUALLY its safe to run the lights, just be aware, if you get cleaned up or you hit someone while running a light you will be up "dodo creek using a barb wire canoe" insurance wise.

MSF instructor (backed up by a former Ill. state trooper) said the only legal thing to do was make a right turn / U-turn. There's no "legal" limit to how many cycles you have to sit through.

I've done the dismount-walk-button thing a couple of times myself. Probably not 100% kosher ... I'm sure there's some "unattended vehicle" language buried in the state statues somewhere.
