I feel bad for the folks who owned the building/chickens (and the chickens, RIP little dudes) but the way you worded that had me lol.

Only a little bit anxious. We had a great crew of people who showed up last night, and everyone was very supportive. It was the perfect sort of fire for a newbie (or "probie" as my chief calls us). The structure was built well, so it wasn't going anywhere too soon. Yet, with the building being small (maybe 30' x 15'), there was no chance of getting lost inside. Lots of time and space with which to work, and I was able to practice most of the skills learned in class.

This was the closest I've gotten to a real working structure fire, and even though we were outside for most of our work, the smoke and flames were very intense - gave me yet another level of respect for the power of fire.

Cheers,
Loonette

I'm not sure "cool" is prehaps a word I'd associate with walking into blazing infernos, but I have to agree with the sentiment.

Well done Loonette thats a huge achievement to take on

One more boastful moment in my new line of work. Last night those of us who are new firefighters or EMTs or officers were officially sworn in to our department, giving our oath to both the nation as well as the great state of Ohio (she says smirking!).

Also, "Scan" became an official member and has obtained his driver certification for our two medics and for the rescue truck. He needed something to do while waiting for the next firefighter class to open up this October. We needed more drivers, so it's great that he's doing this.

Just for laughs, here are some pics of me in uniform. The first is with my chief in the background (talking with new EMT Valerie - check out her wild dread locks!). Our chief is about the funniest guy I've ever known - a truly knowledgeable and reliable person, but man... he's literally a laugh every second when he gets going. The other pic is just of me hanging out in the medic. It's out of focus a bit, but basically, that's me.

Cheers,
Loonette
