Trust me, medical is good if you're in a crash. As is comprehensive (if you finance the bike comprehensive is VITAL).

I crashed 3 years ago, with minor injuries that ran a couple thousand $. Also needed new protective gear. My comprehensive covered the first $1000 of medical and $1000 toward new gear in addition to repairing the bike.

Some "regular" insurers will refuse to pay for motorcycle related injuries, the AMA is working to make sure that that is changed.

The rate I was quoting was an annual rate which I believe was the case with the others. It appears our insurance regulations differ from the States. But then, one has to wonder, I was out for a drive this afternoon in my car and saw two different single vehicle accidents where bikers were down - one guy going like a bat out of hell and lost it on a curve where there was still sand from the last snow fall and where he slid for some 500 feet before coming to a rest on the opposite shoulder. The guy went by me about 5 minutes earlier and I thought, oh man, that's not good. Needless to say, his bike was far from being ridable and I have to pay exorbitant insurance rates. Hmmm.

Anyway, I'm paying a little less than $150/year, with a $250 deductible. Comprehensive and Collision, on an '01 V-star 650.
Ah you are correct. I make assumptions that may be different than other peoples. The figures and the poll are for annual insurance cost.

I'd recommend both coverages - depending on you feel for paying for these things afterward out of your own cash. :)

But it is more complicated than that. When I look at the medical coverage from progressive:

1) It is too low to cover even a single nights stay in a hospital.
2) There are limitations - in states like NJ - where we have PIP (where you basically have to pay for the right to sue for anything less than missing limbs) and the medical coverage MIGHT not apply. It isn't entirely clear to me.

And the medical coverage - is easily more expensive than the rest of the insurance cost. But worth it, well I hope so, I'm going to have to ask questions of a real person at Progressive (or wherever I get my insurance) to understand if I can get the medical coverage and what it really covers.

Honestly, 10K medical coverage is nice, but my mother-in-law - when she died she spent 17 hours in a hospital - the bill came back - $17K.

I have medical coverage through work so the medical coverage I would have gotten through State Farm wouldnt be worth the price.

interesting

In my small town (noble) Oklahoma, any motorcycle under 1000cc's is 75 bucks for liability (a year). (these are progressive quotes) about ten bucks more from geico. i dont know about allstate, and statefarm - they tend to be more expensive compared to the rest. I am unfortunate, I have travelers for my house and cars but they do not cover motorcycles. I am going to buy an 07 M50 limited with cash, so comprehensive is not required. I think I may go for a 500 deductible, but use my work insurance for medical and life.

Thanks for the great advice.

It depends on the bike. If you have an old beater that's paid for, it wouldn't be smart to buy comp/coll if it cost 50% of what the bike was worth (unless you're planning on totalling it right away  ).

I get medical coverage through work, so that's a non-issue for me.
