now i know harley's are fine motorcycles, and would certainly be a joy to own one, but what is the major problem ppl have with beginninng their riding career on a smaller moto?
hd's are alot of bike in many ways,(and i did have occasion to ride a full dresser after i finished msf last year.) but i don't think i could learn properly on one. simply too much weight and torque.
just sit on yer money and buy a 2k japanese bike that you can resell in the spring for $1900. and chalk the year up to experience.
it's almost insulting for ppl to just 'buy the biker image' and get an HD an then not wave at me coz they're a snob.

Wellllllllll after browsing around these forums sitting on my money is exactly what I'll be doing....I'm currently looking at cheap yamaha and suzuki models anywhere in the range of 250cc-750cc. I want to go about this the right way and enjoy myself over a lifespan.....screw images, I'm not one to buy into the whole badass-biker thing. I'm generally a nice guy who would give you a wave if I saw you riding around.
Thanks for your input you guys have helped me a lot in such a short amount of time

I live in... an "upperclass urban-yuppie" sort of area, so I've found that the majority of people around here who ride bikes are not bikers. They are sunday rumblers, which is to say they buy a big expensive bike, and top notch leathers (for themselves, never the person on the back) and tool around town on Sundays to show that they are still cool and with it. I never got many waves from them.
it don't matter where you live. Or how snootitiy or upper (or lower) class you think you is...
i stay out in Hickstown USA and the Bikers on Harleys have no love for the wave. It's Okay though, like i said, we're all bikers, and when they're daydreaming of being on the road while they're at work, they'll wave; if only then,...

And it's been a trend for squids on sportbikes not to wave to ME, but I don't get all bent out of shape about it.
I wave and if they wave back - bonus! If not, I just shake my head and carry on. Check out the last entry I made about reverse discrimination in my blog on this site.
And FWIW, my girlfriend and I hosted a ride today with some of our closest riding friends. Here's one of the pics:
See all the happy faces - and the nice mix of metric cruisers, sport bikes and Harleys? Not ALL of us Harley riders are snobs ya know.

and fer the record, i'm not 'bent out of shape' either...
i appreciate the effirt ya made to bridge 'the gap' and how ye always stay composed, even when some folks want for graffiti.

*sigh* I didn't take it personal. Nor was I implying you were bent out of shape, it was just an expression. I was just trying to let you know that not all Harley riders a snobs, that's all.

We aren't making fun of Harleys to insult you. We just make fun of each other. I've been teased for:
having a purple bike
having a red helmet (BuzZz called it purple)
allowing a picture of me to be taken under a dumped bike (BuzZz again)
dumping MY bike
I get called Skooter all the time.
We're just a fun loving bunch of people, and mean no real harm by what we say. It'll probably continue despite your best efforts, just as I'll never loose the moniker Scooter.
Life isn't ALWAYS fair, but you're on two wheels, and as such have my respect.

Come on now, my bike (see Honda gallery) is actually that color (or close to it), so it can't be too bad.
