The main advantage of the sportster is huge dealer network, can be upgraded to 1200cc easily, and a HUGE aftermarket.

The triumph isn't a harley (if you want something different), are much more reliable than old triumphs were, and may be more comfortable than the sport y for a taller guy (you can always put forward controls on the sporty if you find its riding position cramped though).

I'm a newbie myself and have been riding since August. I have a 2001 HD Sportster 1200C and LOVE it... I was a little concerned at first about the CC's, but as it has been mentioned here, an 883 or 1200 Harley CC is not the same as a 650 CC sportbike... I've put about 500 miles on mine and am looking at having to put it up here in a week or so... can't wait for March to roll around...

The one thing that I have heard is that a 2004 or newer sportster has a better ride because of the engine mounting... I haven't tried it, but the one that I have can make you feel as though you've been on it for a while...

883 is a good first bike and a bad one too, It is low to the ground but heavy for a frist bike. When I started riding, it was in the dirt and then I move up to 250's and 350's. I think the best bike to start on is the Buell blast or at least lerne on on and then get the sportster. This is how harley will train you. I see to many new riders get hurt with too much bike or to much power, it is your life you can always move up later.

One more thing. I am new to this site but not riding, started when I was 9 and I am now 48. Good luck and be safe.
