For you info in Washington State Tireflies are considered illegal lighting and cops will give you a ticket if your using them. I think they look cool, but the law considers them distracting to other drivers.

Put them on your mountain bike.

How can I find out what colors, if any, are illegal where I live? Which colors are illegal where you live?

Since my bike is red, I think thats the color I would like.

Also, are they on all the time? Is there a way to only have them turn on at night? How long do the batteries last?
you need to call someone or research it. in my state i know blue and purple are for certain legal, i know red isnt, yellow isnt and i dont Think green is legal. basically anything that can resemble an emergency vehicle you cant have, or street light colors to keep confusion down.

i have blue on mine and havent had any legal problems i know a cop that recomended getting them for my bike so....

they have motion censors that turn them on when the wheel spins, you can actually see them in the day light so its good to have them on all the time. ive had mine coming up on a year now and replaced the batteries just recent. the claim from the company is 200 hours of actual riding time. and new batteries are cheap enough.

At the end of the day, the best way to find out, is to go down into cow town, and visit that there sheriff. They should be able to tell you, or look it up to find out
