Just telling you what I see. 90% of Harley riders don't wear full face helmets. Apparently they don't look "cool". I see some sport bike riders without helmets bit it's probably 50/50.

Yes, exactly 90 of 100 Harley riders do not wear a full face. Well you have three who have replied to this thread who do wear (including me). Translated, if there are 30 HD riders on this forum, then the rest do not wear a full face.

I don't understand why you feel the need to single out and stereotype "us Harley riders" as unsafe in our choice of apparel when on the bike. It's just like the old "Harley owners need attention so they put straight pipes on." I have seen many a metric cruisers with ridiculously loud pipes. But tell me, when you see someone ride by you with a half helmet or skull cap on, do you know for sure that he's riding an HD? If you can say that 90 of 100 riders who are both wearing a skull cap or half helmet and riding an HD while you pass by them on the roads then maybe you should look to your own riding habits...AKA pay more attention to the road ahead of you rather than what people are wearing and/or riding.

And yes, I wear the half helmet "to be cool." Or maybe it's just the fact that I like not having a face shield sometimes. Or maybe it's just the fact that I don't give a flying **** about what people like you say. Or maybe it's just the fact that I feel like it.

As someone else said, it's up to each of us to evaluate and measure the amount of risk we're willing to take. To take a demeaning and condescending tone to those who can tolerate more risk is superficially judgemental and extremely arrogant IMO.

The gear issue is a problem regardless of brand. I spent 3 months in Houston this summer, saw hundreds if not thousands of riders, mostly Harleys, but still plenty of metric bikes. Of those, I can only remember 4 wearing gear. My dad and I are two, and the other two were beemer guys.

While you should wear all gear all the time, it still remains a personal choice. I wouldn't really define it as a problem, than more of simply a discussion point. To me, many riders just seem to prefer not wearing gear. While i typically recommend full gear, I at least have the required level of maturity to respect other people's personal decisions. Who am I to pass judgement on someone else's personal choices when it has very little affect on me?

That's why when I hear condescending comments from peoplel like gunslinger, I'm tempted to tell them to sling their tool up their *** and plug up their comments and opinions because that's all they are worth.

Take a look at the Sturgis Rally. Most of the bikes there are Harleys. How many Harley riders are seen wearing full face? Not many. Or am I being arrogant? Maybe so. I was not passing judgement, just making an observation. The fact that Koji 1) rides a Harley and 2) wears a half helmet only solidifies my point.

Like I said, wear what you want. It's your face.

Yes I ride a Harley. No I don't wear a half helmet only. I ALWAYS wear a full face to work and at night, and sometimes will wear the half helmet on the weekend.

And yes, you can voice your opinions in as condescending a manner as you want. When I read something like that, I'll reply saying that you're full of "poo poo". It's all good.

Works for me! Because "I don't give a flying **** about what people like you say".

Wow, what great comments from everyone....I thank you all. I have to say, I'm excited my wife wants to ride with me and her safety is my number 1 concern. Points were made here that I never thought of and therefore, for her well being, I will gracefully push the full face or maybe a modular helmet for her...( a bit torn on the modular). However, to be honest, I am a Harley owner.....I wear a half helmet. I was a Honda owner.....I wore full face. Full face never bothered me and I never felt uncool. Heck, if anything, I feel like a 6'2", 245lbs. geek wearing my DOT half helmet that gives me the classic "mushroom head" look. But, I'm wearing it. So, why a half helmet for me? 1. I have a Harley...yup, you saw that right....just being honest 2. IGNORANCE/stupidity. I am ashamed to say I never, for whatever reason, thought about my face skidding across the pavement. I guess what I am trying to get at is because of the differing opinions, be they right, wrong, or indifferent, excellent points have been made and that's what this site is all about. Also, I will now look for a full face (or modular) helmet for myself.....after all, UV protection and communication system..... . You know, that communication part is great because she hates it when I turn my head to say something to her. And please don't rip me for turning my head....she's WAY ahead of ya.
