That may be a good description for the SD. It's really hard to catergorize it.
It certainly has deviated enough from the original Duke 620(609 )'s formula of pioneering the supermotard movement. Although it has not lost any of its Hooligan personality.

Are Vstrom, much-beloved Versys, and BMW's not in this category? The Versys really is an excellent all-around bike, with a detuned Ninja engine as well. It is great in traffic, in that it is agile and torquey enough to get out of harm's way. It can also be made into a tourer. Haven't ridden the Vstrom but it too is versatile and reliable--as are Beemers. If I were tall enough, I'd also look into Tigers & the Superdukes.

They have much more suspension usually than the hooly machines and are a little tougher to corner hard on but they are able if you are

There really isn't anything "motard" about it. But, it is definitely different than anything else out there. It's a great bike....I love mine

How do you like the Versys???? Is the engine rev happy or is really a good around the city town bike .I like the looks of them , but never rode one yet.

wasn't what you call a standard simply a motorcycle at some point? as there were more styles there were more classifications.

so is an fz6n a naked sportbike or a standard? it doesn't have a fairing, it has mid foot controls and it sits you upright. sounds like your definition. but i have an fz6. has all the same stuff but a small fairing upfront. is it a standard or a sportbike? or is it a sportstandard? i'd call my fz6 a standard and i'd know exactly what someone was talking about if they called an fz6n a naked standard. times change... with that means that terms and definitions do to.

I tend to think of the FZ6 as a standard - despite having a fairing. But I'm pretty sure my definitions are all screwed up...

that's the problem. growing up i listened to heavy metal. but within that category there was

speed metal
thrash metal
death metal
hair metal
glam metal

these were well established terms in my area. but it was all heavy metal. but how do you define heavy metal? every time a new type came out we had to figure out if it was metal or not. it was until a few years ago that i heard people refer to led zeppelin and black sabbath as heavy metal. to me they were classic rock.

on the way home i thought of another standard category. i've heard people refer to "retro-standards" to refer to making standards that look like the original standards. it all goes to how things change.

btw, i don't really care about all this. it was a slow day at the office near the end and figured i'd jump into the conversation.

How do I like my Versys?? Well, lemme think ... I frickin' love my Versys!! It is the Ninja 650 detuned, so no, it isn't rev happy. Apparently, if you know how to ride well, it can beat liter bikes in the twisties; they will smoke it on the straights, though. The look has changed already. The 2010 has a different cowling and headlight, as well as rubber mounts for the engine and foot pegs. A heated grip option, too, but strangely, they left the ABS option to Europe. The supposed vibration didn't seem significant to me, and I rode it to CO and back. It sits up nicely, inspires confidence in the turns, and will wheelie in the right hands (not mine.) It will hang at 85-90 mph for hours quite happily--ask the CO police. Brakes seemed fine to me, but after demo-ing a Ducati, I can see why they are considered just adequate. I've been told that changing to SS brake cables apparently helps a lot, without even changing out the brakes.
