I ocassionally ride with my headphones. My mp3 player only goes so loud and it's more like background noise for me. I also found that there was so much noise from the wind that I couldn't hear much anyways going speed. At slow speeds I can still hear okay, even with the headphones.

As stated, I wear ear plugs to protect my hearing when riding because the noise created at different speeds damages your hearing quicker than without them. I was concerned about hearing with them, but they don't stop sound completely, they just tone it down so you can still hear everything going on around you.

Here's some information on the damaging effects:
http://www.earplugs.gb.com/index.html
http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk/prod ... ortDetails

Both vary safe times, but the conclusion is the same in that a small amount of noise protection makes a big difference.

I've only been wearing them for the last couple of months, but am glad I do.

That makes sense, we always keep ear plugs here because of the farm machinery, I think I'll try a pair and see next time I ride. I just worry about not hearing another vehicle, although things like car horns would still be audible.

My Dad's a long time rider, and now he's quite deaf, so maybe your right!!!! :(

Another vote for earplugs here too. The wind noise inside my helmet is all but unbearable at anything over 50mph. (I have sensitive hearing).

Earplugs protect your hearing and greatly reduce fatigue at the end of the ride.

I can hear everything I need to hear just fine (i.e. other traffic).

I can also hear the engine better :P
