mike - i need a good pair of summer gloves - are those second ones cool? also, looks a little light on the thumb protection... is there more than just the fabric? or is it kevlar or something else reinforced?

Hehe - oh yeah, I bet. Like when I went to sit on a BMW S1000RR - and got to literally sit on it for 10 seconds. Gonna try and look at some helmets today.

The fingers seem to have more protection than the thumb on the tops, but are the same on the underside. The underside is leather the top is a tight fabic that you can blow through but you can't see through, I would assume it's a safety type of fabric as Joe Rocket makes very good protective riding clothes.

I just bought a pair of Joe Rocket Phoenix 4.0 gloves with hardened knuckles. It's a tiny bit loose fitting compared to the Alpinestars I had. It feels nice and comfy and I hardly notice them while riding or stopped. Both are mesh and well padded but I like how the Alpinestars fit better with no extra space in the fingers no matter how small. Plus the Alpinestars cinched better at the wrist then the Rockets but they both feel secure (for mesh gloves).

I had Icon summer gloves and those things were cheap in quality. A hole formed in the finger area after a summer of use and the wrist strap frayed by the end of fall, not to mention the lightweight protection they had even though they looked aggressive. I almost bought another pair yesterday but after comparing them to the Joe Rocket gloves I felt I was better off paying a bit more for the Phoenix than the Icons (I didn't even bother looking at the name of it since it felt so cheap and same reason I held off on buying their mesh jackets).

I have an issue with gloves always being too short for my thumb... I've tried many brands but haven't had a lot of success. I was so frustrated that I ended cutting off the end of the thumbs all together. At least in the summer you can get away with that. Winter is another story...I have heated Harley gloves but they don't stay waterproof for long and even though they fit not too bad, I still have issues with the thumb.
