Wow, thanks! That's really helpful, and I appreciate the time you put into crafting such an in depth and thoughtful response. It'll definitely help as I'm perusing the market for my first ride.

Thanks to everyone who helped me. I ended up going with a 2001 Yamaha V-Star 650 Classic. I'm heading out today; I hope everything works out!

Just thought I should add that I made the trip down from Fairbanks to Tucson successfully, without any major debacles. Thanks again to your guys efforts in guiding me towards the right bike as I was figuring everything out (now time to find a job... ugh).
