Not to sound mean, rude, or cruel but John pretty much hit the nail right on the head.
In the US, riding a motorcyle is pretty much a hobby. It is supposed to be enjoyable and something you really want to do. It's not supposed to be something you have to force it on yourself. It's a hobby. Either you like it or you don't. There are tons of other hobbies one can take up. Life is too short to be stuck with a hobby that one doesn't enjoy or question its merit.
That being said, I love motorcycling and knew it the moment I first rode a bike when I was a kid.

Hi there pumpkin ti.ts
A hobby, A HOBBY, you have to be joking ????
WTF, OMG a Hobby ???? You sure you mean Hobby ????
As for the original posters concern, "tell your mate (or if its you heheheh) Grow a set of hairy ones and get back on the horse and stop ya fookin crying"
Geeuz christ !!!! Wtf are you going to learn from a book .....a BOOK and a DVD????? are you serious ?
Im stunned what has happened to you guys, 1st one calls riding a hobby and the other has fallen off his bike on his driveway and is to scared to go riding again.
I knew this would happen if I disappeared for any length of time
love me
.

Heres my story... I dumped my bike on some black ice going over an overpass one day on the ay to work. It totally caught me by suprise (as accidents do). I went down and had some cosmetic damage to the bike and broke the shifter off. But my leg was pretty banged up. It looked like I was wearing a pruple sock with all the blood pooling in it. The horn cover had came over and was resting on my calf while we both slide down the road a bit. Anyway, I had not been on the bike since Nov 2008 as I was waiting to get it fixed and was deployed to Iraq for a bit. I came home recently and got back on. It felt weird getting into the corners again and sometimes it feels like its going to slide out on me again, but I know it wont. I trustin the bike and I trust in my ability to ride. Thats the key, just like everyone here is saying, just get back on and ride it. Take your time, do the basics and ride the bike till your comfortable.

Some of you boys are being a bit harsh
We've all had to learn, either that or started off so arrogant & knew everything already
Could the friend retake a beginner course?
Or pay for some private lessons?
As for giving up..........ok riding may not be for him in the long run, but his self confidence will suffer if he doesn't at least try to conquer "the fear".

Mog, it's an old thread from last summer someone resurrected. It was a Shane-O thread, don't think he's been around since you've joined.
(He comes and goes, kinda like athelete's foot.
)
Shane-O's from Oz, and.... ummmmm...... different.

Ya can't take him too too seriously, or...... ummm .... yer head might explode, and that would be messy. Hopefully he'll come back someday soon, and you can sample the full wonderfulness of His Shane-ness straight and uncut!!!

Aussies...what you get when you breed a Brit and a Yank and end up with the worse traits of both.

Today I heard a story of someone who got Armorall too far around on the tire tread and as soon as he leaned into the first turn, he was down. So, when I hear stuff like that, it's not hard to wonder if mine will return if I take the leap and start up again after 36 years.
If it feels good, keep doing it, but if your little voice says to you "I am not confident on this thing" or "I'm afraid on this thing", do what I did 36 years ago and get off the thing - until that little voice changes it's tune.

Just get out there and learn, I am a new rider, wanted to ride, went and got a permit and a bike, practiced eights and circles for 10 miles in a parking lot across the street from my house, build the confidence in the turns, learn the bike, know the moves and use good judgement, i went with a 05 honda shadow 600, lower seat hieght, smaller engine, but still a nice ride. i almost dumped it coming into my drive caught byself luckly i had a small enough bike to correct myself, but its not that he dumped it or i almost dumped it, its relizing what could have caused it and what you may do to try and make it not happen again. It has nothing to do with being a wuss or not wanting to ride, clearly he wants to ride it went through all this effort. the thought of an accident is scary no doubt we read all of these horror stories and you have to wonder, but just ride, start slow and if need be stay at a slow pace riding a bike is not meant to be the best and know it all at the end of the week, let him take it at his pace and ride safe
