Your roads are reputed to be very good and flat, so cruisers are a good option for you. In South Africa the BMW 650 GS is the favourite start up bike. Plenty power, top end of 160kms, easy to ride and you can get off the beaten track as well. If you are a first time rider consider your running costs and buying a pre owned bike from a reputable dealer.
7 000 dollars would buy a very good pre owned 650 GS in SA. Nothing beats going on a good training course and then going on more as you get experianced. I rode observed trials for 15 years before getting back onto the road. I started with a Moto guzzi SP 1000 which was brilliant for an old bike, then went to a bee em 1150 rt and then to the K1200S. Throughout all that time I never stopped learning and still put in as many training days and track days as I can afford. 80% of my long distance riding is with my goose and you certainly need different skills riding two up.
