Sportsters are the cheapest Harley you can buy. I think they look terrible.
I would never buy one. But I would buy a Harley Lowrider. A big difference
in a Harley. DH owns a Harley Classic and it has a great ride.

I think the next bike I buy will be a Honda 750cc Aero. A sweet bike.

And therein lies the difference between people. I love the look of a raw Sportster. And I enjoy the more nimble handling.

Each to his/her own. Just enjoy what you ride.

I must say I've never owned a HD yet something draws my eye when I look at them. I think the blend of function vs. form is an important aspect of Harleys. It appears to me that the mechanicalness of HD's is an actual reflection of functionality. For example my Suzuki Marauder looked great and was indeed a fine bike, yet it had useless chromed plastic bits/covers designed to look like functioning parts of the engine and bike. As far as I can tell Harleys aren't spartan by any means but the parts are all functional and also contribute to the overall aesthetic.

I would never buy a Harley Davidson because it was cool or the thing to do. I'll get one because of what it is and appreciate it not only for its usefullness but as an artform. Something that provokes a cherished response in me.

HD isn't the only brand out there with this attribute. Triumph has some models that refect the same philosophy for example. Or Confederate motorcycles! http://www.confederate.com/

If you are ever in Las Vegas go to the Venetian and see the Guggenheim motorcycle exhibit. It protrays bikes for the artform that they can be.

Of course I really like all motorcycles.

Well, lots of people buy a "Hayabusa", CBR, GXR, or whatever. Many people buy things either for the brand name or model name. It is no different!
